The immense hype surrounding the impending release of Grand Theft Auto 6 has left gamers across the world desperate for more from developer Rockstar Games. Thankfully, a recent update has revealed some exciting news regarding an upcoming remake.

Remakes and remasters are almost a necessity in the gaming world, where consoles both dictate the visuals and performance of titles and potentially lock them away from gamers in the future.

We’ve seen many scenarios where some of the best titles ever made have become effectively 'lost' as the only way to play them is on consoles that very few people still own. A modern remake gives it a fresh coat of paint and also makes it available to a modern audience.

That could be the case for a certain upcoming remake that Rockstar Games is working on, though, and the latest developer update has left plenty of people desperate to get their hands on it.

What Rockstar remake has received a new update?

As reported by Insider Gaming, Remedy Entertainment's 2025 half-year financial report has revealed exciting new details regarding the previously announced remakes for Max Payne 1 & 2.

Home to the Matrix-style bullet time action that has become one of the gaming industry's most iconic mechanics, the first two games in the Max Payne series weren't actually developed by Rockstar Games, as the company served solely as a publisher.

Remedy Entertainment – the team now behind Alan Wake and Control – took the reins for its 2001 and 2003 entries, with studio head Sam Lake even scanning his own face into the game to serve as the titular protagonist's visage.

It has largely remained challenging to play Max Payne outside of owning a PC across the last few console generations, yet the reveal that both Remedy and Rockstar Games were working together on a remake was met with plenty of excitement.

Issuing an update on the remake, Remedy's financial statement outlined:

"The Max Payne 1 & 2 remake project continues its progress and remains in full production. In the second quarter, the team built on steady momentum from earlier in the year. Collaboration with Rockstar Games remains close and productive, ensuring alignment as the project advances toward its next major phase."

Reading between the lines, it looks like it will still be a while before the remake pair is officially released, especially as we have no current launch window. Considering it’s in active production, it hopefully shouldn't be too long.

Being a collaborative effort between Remedy and Rockstar, it's likely that there won't be too many resources pulled away from either team, especially as both have Control 2 and Grand Theft Auto 6 as their clear priorities right now.

How have fans reacted to the Max Payne update?

Understandably, many fans continue to express their excitement following the update, especially as there are several people who have only experienced the series through the Rockstar-developed Max Payne 3.

"I'm totally fantasizing here since I don't know what engine they're gonna use, but the idea of Max Payne 1 and 2 remade with RDR2 tier ragdoll physics and animations makes me giddy," writes on commenter on Reddit. That certainly would be the perfect tool to combine with the elaborate bullet time dives you'll be doing every other second.

"God I'm so hyped for more Max Payne, even if it's 'just' a remake and not a new title," another writes, adding that it's "such a cool franchise."
