There has now been a significant recall issued by the FDA affecting nearly 2,000 products, as numerous food and drink items have been highlighted due to the presence of 'rodent and avian contamination'.

It's not uncommon to have recalls for products these days as defects and issues are identified after the point of sale, yet something on this scale is relatively uncommon and could be cause for alarm as government officials attempt to track down the affected products.

The alert, issued by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), highlights both the abundance of products and the dangers that they pose, indicating that they were distributed to a number of different stores in Indiana, Minnesota, and North Dakota, as per Dexerto.

The recall itself is being handled by Gold Star Distribution, Inc., and it all relates to the potential contamination of rodent and avian materials, including the following:

The recall notice issued by the FDA highlights that this poses a significant risk that people could become 'seriously ill' if they come in contact with any of the contaminated materials, noting that this includes "the potential for bacterial contamination, which may result in illness or infection, including Salmonella."

In particular, it highlights the dangers facing "infants, young children, frail or elderly people, pregnant persons, persons with pre-existing pathology [...] and others with weakened immune systems," outlining that there could even be the chance of potentially fatal infections.

"Healthy person infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain," the alert notes, adding that "in rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis."

Thankfully no illnesses have been reported as of the time of the recall alert's release, but individuals and retailers with affected products have been urged to "destroy the products as soon as possible and verify such destruction by receipt provided to Gold Star."

In terms of what products were affected, it includes the following: "Drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, dietary supplements, and human and animal (pet) food products," although it does not apply to frozen and refrigerated items.

The FDA has also provided a list of stores across major cities such as Minneapolis, Indianapolis, and beyond that had the possibility to be supplied some of the now-recalled products, informing customers where they might need to be concerned.
