Gamer shows off rare PlayStation discovery that could be worth thousands

He found an untouched relic

There's no better feeling than finding an old piece of tech collecting dust in your attic, as while the gadgets available to us now are likely far more powerful, older items in the right condition can be worth hundreds, if not thousands, to the right seller.

We've seen it with plenty of games before that become increasingly rare as time goes on, and people are willing to pay thousands of dollars in order to be the proud owners of rare vinyl records and CDs.

Games consoles themselves are a particularly great topic for this, as not only are they far harder to find in perfect condition – as who would buy a console never to open it – but they are also more likely to degrade and stop working over time, making the 'surviving' gadgets become more and more valuable.

Often you can't quite actually comprehend how much something is worth until its right in front of you, and one Reddit user went through that exact experience when showing off their rare PlayStation find on the social media platform.

What was the rare PlayStation discovery?

Posted on the r/gaming subreddit, u/TiaoAK47 shared an image of an unopened PS3 Slim, complete with a PS Move controller and Sports Champions, which they claim was lying untouched and unopened in their uncle's old home.

Now with the PS5 and even the PS5 Pro available to purchase you might be wondering what use a comparatively ancient PS3 would be in 2025, but it surprisingly holds plenty of value.

Not only are there a number of games that remain still locked to the system, including classics like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Grand Theft Auto 4 – although the latter could be getting a remake if rumors are to be believed – but plenty of collectors would also appreciate owning the console in seemingly perfect condition.

"Now you can watch... I mean play MGS4!" Joked one commenter, before clarifying that "it's a really good game and highly recommended as PS3 is the only way you can play."

How much is this PS3 worth?

We have no idea whether the original poster has any intention of selling the console they've been kindly gifted for free, but they could be in for a fortune if they did want to put it up on the marketplace.

The rarity of boxed PS3 consoles – especially special variants like this one – make it difficult to properly comprehend an exact price you could get, but using data from value-tracking website PriceCharting helps give a rough idea.

Standard 'New' listings of the PlayStation 3 Slim 320GB console have sold for around $500 recently, although considering the Move Sports Champions bundle saw that price bump up to $675, with the most recent sale being over three years ago.

Being that the console is boxed and untouched though it might be worth considering the grading process, as that could significantly increase the price that collectors are willing to pay.

PriceCharting distinguishes between 'New' and 'Graded', with the latter being analyzed by a condition rating agency, and that can cause the price to increase exponentially if it receives a good score.

This could cause the console to be easily worth beyond $1,000 if it's in good enough condition, although with no prior sales to base the price from who's to say that it couldn't be even more.
