Iconic PlayStation game you've probably played could be worth hundreds today

Let's hope you still have this one in the attic

If you're one of the 7,000,000 people that bought this iconic original PlayStation game then you could be in luck, as it's currently selling for hundreds of dollars on the used market in the right condition.

There always reaches a point with physical media where something that was once considered old and worthless suddenly becomes incredibly valuable almost precisely because of its age.

You can easily see this with vinyl, CDs, and games alike as collectors treasure retro relics that are becoming increasingly rare to find on the market as time goes on.

One game in particular has proven to be a cash cow in the right circumstances despite its overwhelming popularity, and you might just have this lying in a box in your attic if you're lucky enough.

What iconic PlayStation game is worth over $1,000?

If you were a fan puzzle solving, platforming, or general globe trotting action then there's a very strong chance you've played at least one of the Tomb Raider games.

The iconic franchise starring Lara Croft has cemented itself as one of gaming's biggest names since its debut entry nearly three decades ago, and it's at the very beginning that could net you a nice wad of dough.

There is currently a 'Power of PlayStation Video Games Showcase' going on at Heritage Auctions, and one of the the most popular lots is the original Tomb Raider game on PlayStation.

Despite being an overwhelming popular game when it first released, it has become a bit of a rarity on the secondhand market, especially if you want it in good condition.

This particular listing has a 9.4 rating in terms of quality, and boasts an A+ Seal Grade, so you know it has been excellently preserved despite its near 30-year-old lifespan.

It will cost you a fair amount though, as the current bid sits at a staggering $900, which jumps up to $1,125 with the auction house's 'Buyer's Premium' charge.

With eight days left to bid this is likely only going to increase over time, and we could see it easily stretch into the four-figure range if demand wills it. Like most collectible items at this price point, the hilarious thing is that whoever ends up winning the auction won't even take it out of the case, making the game inside functionally redundant in the grand scheme of things.

How does Tomb Raider's price compare to other games?

Tomb Raider certainly isn't alone in being an expensive option, as many other similar PlayStation titles can set you back far beyond their original recommended retail price.

Metal Gear Solid - the iconic tactical espionage game directed by Hideo Kojima - currently sits at a bid of $500, whereas Resident Evil 3 would set you back $110 right now if you were to put in a bid, and it's roughly at the same quality as Tomb Raider too.

Hilariously, Tomb Raider's sequel is also in the Heritage Auctions lot, but its current bid is only $5, meaning that you'd be able to snag the second game for just 0.55% of the original, although in a slightly worse condition.
