People finally figure out how to turn off infuriating iPhone notification that was 'driving them nuts'

It took you long enough

Reddit users have finally provided us an answer to turn off an infuriating iPhone notification.

For all their handy features and unique innovations, there's still a lot of unnecessary stuff clogging up our iPhones. As Apple continues to roll out a new iOS versions and iPhones like clockwork, it feels like we've only just got to grips with the last one before a new one is in our hands. With all the good, every new iOS also comes with the odd annoying feature that forces us to dash to our settings to turn it off.

Unfortunately for iPhone users, they've been struggling to turn off one irritating feature, and it's driving them nuts.

Arriving as part of 2023's iOS 17 Messages app in 2023 the Check In feature is great on paper. With worried family members or loved ones sending that 'drive safely' or 'message me when you get in' text, the Check In feature is a reminder to let someone know you're back safe. It was later added to the Workouts app in watchOS 11 on Apple Watch in 2024, but it seems not everyone is a fan.

Posting on Reddit, one iPhone user vented about the seemingly random nature of the Check In feature, saying their Apple Watch triggered it when they stepped away from the table to go to the toilet in a restaurant.

Others in the thread were equally against Check In, but most seemed stumped about how to turn it off.

Having scrolled through every corner of their settings, most can't seem to figure out how to turn off Check In - leaving their notifications flooded by annoying popups.

While some thought it was new integration with the release of Apple Intelligence and iOS 18.1, one dismayed owner wrote: "Had similar notifications since iOS 17 after trying this feature once with a friend."

Someone else pointed out: "Following. For whatever reason, this started for me before iOS 18 and it always suggests I check in with my sister in law when I’m leaving my office. I barely speak to my sister in law at all… 🤷🏻‍♂️"

A third raged in a different thread and wrote: "It’s the most annoying f**king notification in the world… and I’ve tried for 2 weeks to delete now but not found anything!!"

Thankfully, the fix is relatively simple, with this thread also holding the answer.

To get rid of the annoying Check In notifications, simply go to Settings > Google Maps > Siri & Search > Turn off Suggestions.

Someone else replied saying they've also turned it off in Apple Maps just to be safe.

It finally looks like we're free from the shackles of having to check in with your friend every morning, just because you thought it would be quirky to try out the Check In feature in 2023 and have been regretting it ever since. Don't thank us, thank the depth of Reddit.
