They might be more durable than you think

We're long past the days of phones breaking or cracking if you even look at them the wrong way yet it's still remarkable quite how durable certain devices can be, as one Reddit user revealed.

iPhones haven't always been the most durable of gadgets, and if you were around during the release of the iPhone 6 then the phrase 'bendgate' will probably send shivers up your spine.

Apple has done a lot to improve on that over the years though, with massive upgrades to the screen and surroundings that make having a case not feel like an essential anymore — albeit outside of a few rare circumstances.

You still might get a scratch over time or a crack if it suffers a bad fall, but nothing sums up the improvements made to the newest iPhones more than a miraculous discovery by one Redditor who nearly died, as their device survived the most unlikely of scenarios.

As shared by u/bricksandcanvas on the r/iphone subreddit, they recount how the impact of Typhoon Kalmegi on their city not only nearly killed them but left their family home a ruin, but somehow despite all of that their iPhone emerged unscathed.

"Typhoon Kalmegi just hit our city, and my house just got totally destroyed, and everything in it. I had to go on top of the roof to keep [from] drowning, but slipped, and fell into the flowing waters," they recall.

"Prolly took me around 15 minutes of holding on to dear life before I was able to finally pull myself and get back on top. Before I slipped, I was holding onto my phone, and that's when it fell."

Most people would completely write off the possibility of even finding their iPhone again in a situation like that, let alone have it be working if they did manage to come across it, but it appears as if it was their lucky day.

"Once the flooding subsided, I was too injured to look for my phone so I just waited until I was well enough to go look for it and after 3 days this brick of a phone being in mud, I found it."

After a short charge and the anticipation of turning it on again, they realized that it worked again as if nothing had even happened, and apart from being caked in mud (which was seemingly able to be washed away with no issue) the phone was returned to its previous state.

"If you stop and think about it, it is incredible how far mobile phones have come in terms of durability," writes one comment in response to the post. "We have very much assumed it and take it for granted, but it is truly amazing that an electronic device, with how fragile its components really are to weather situations and shocks, can withstand all of this."

You might not want to bet on this happening again, but it goes to show that your iPhone might be able to withstand far more than you'd expect, and could even come out the other side completely unscathed.
