Submarine vanished after uncovering mysterious structures hiding beneath Antarctica

It came from a research project led by British and American scientists

The effects of global warming are causing the massive ice sheets in areas like Antarctica to melt away at an incredibly alarming rate, but that same process allows scientists to explore more than ever before, with one particular submarine uncovering a number of mysterious structures.

Nature can obscure pretty much everything if given enough time and the right conditions, and only now are humans beginning to see key parts of ancient history revealed before our eyes — albeit for all the wrong reasons.

Perhaps the only 'positive' consequence of climate change – which has seen the world's average temperatures increase, prompting ice to melt away – is that certain structures and parts of the world are appearing out of thin air, to the point where potentially major discoveries are being made.

Understandably, many of these are situated in areas like Antarctica where ice is plentiful, yet one submarine scientists were using to head autonomously underneath the giant ice sheets has seemingly vanished.

As reported by the Daily Galaxy, the submarine was operated as part of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC), which is a joint scientific research effort between the United Kingdom and the United States.

Within this, scientists used autonomous underwater vehicles to explore underneath the Dotson Ice Shelf in Antarctica in order to see how it and similar natural structures respond to changing ocean temperatures, yet they found more than they were bargaining for.

They were able to produce high resolution maps of more than 140 square kilometers underneath the ice sheet across a 27-day-long survey, creating images and information that had never been seen before in this detail.

Anna Wåhlin, professor of oceanography at the University of Gothenburg, asserted that it was "a bit like seeing the back of the Moon for the first time," as the sonar images revealed mysterious structures underneath the ice with terraced edges, teardrop-shaped pits, and long melt channels.

However, in an attempt by researchers to repeat the process back in 2024 to assess any further changes and potentially discover even more fascinating finds underneath the ice, they encountered a major issue.

The vehicle known as 'Ran' that they were using entered the water for a 24-hour dive, but it failed to return and scientists have no idea where it is.

It's impossible for radio signals to reach through hundreds of meters of solid ice, and without any live data link there's no way of knowing where the vehicle ended up.

Some have speculated that mechanical failure or an unexpected collision is the cause of the disappearance, but the submarine remains lost and a mystery that will hopefully be solved when another vehicle makes its way underneath the ice in the future.
