CEOs of Twitch, Reddit, Steam and Discord to testify before congress following Charlie Kirk assassination

Two platforms have welcomed the opportunity

The CEOs of leading social platforms are being called to testify on online 'radicalisation.'

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman James Comer invited the CEOs of Discord, Steam, Twitch, and Reddit to appear before Congress on 8 October 2025.

Charlie Kirk, co-founder of the conservative student movement Turning Point USA, was speaking at an event attended by about 3,000 people when he was fatally shot in the neck.

Suspect 22-year-old Tyler Robinson was arrested on Friday (12 September) after a 33-hour manhunt. President Trump noted that someone 'close' to the suspect had 'turned him in'.

Authorities shared some of the disturbing messages Robinson reportedly sent on Discord after Kirk’s death. In one exchange, Robinson was reportedly tagged in messages that included 'wya' with a skull emoji, implying he looked like he was being sought by the FBI.

However, Robinson allegedly joked that this was his 'doppelganger' trying to ‘get him in trouble’.

Other messages included one user writing: “Tyler killed Charlie!!!” as another user suggested turning Robinson in for $100,000 reward the FBI had offered up. “Only if I get a cut,” replied Robinson.

Now, the hearing is hoped to provide answers about how these social platforms are handling the growing problem of users becoming 'radicalised' and potentially inciting political violence.

“The politically motivated assassination of Charlie Kirk claimed the life of a husband, father, and American patriot. In the wake of this tragedy, and amid other acts of politically motivated violence, Congress has a duty to oversee the online platforms that radicals have used to advance political violence," Comer said.

"To prevent future radicalisation and violence, the CEOs of Discord, Steam, Twitch, and Reddit must appear before the Oversight Committee and explain what actions they will take to ensure their platforms are not exploited for nefarious purposes.”

According to Reuters, Discord accepted the opportunity, stating: "We continuously engage with policymakers on these critical issues and look forward to continuing this important dialogue next month."

Reddit defended its platform's policies and said it has not yet found evidence that the suspect in Kirk's death was active on the platform, Reuters reported.

A spokesperson for Reddit added that the platform 'has strong policies against hateful content and content that incites, encourages, glorifies or calls for violence.'

Meanwhile, two other major social media players were missed from the hearing.

Neither Meta (which owns Facebook and Instagram) nor X received invitations to testify, despite having far larger user bases than the platforms that were called in, as per Statista.
