Does President McConaughey have a nice ring to it? Well, if Ronald Reagan could turn things around from being a Hollywood heartthrob to the 40th president of the United States, who's to say Matthew McConaughey can't do the same?
After all, it worked for Arnold Schwarzenegger as Governor of California.
While the Interstellar star might seem like the kind of charismatic leader people would gravitate toward, McConaughey has been accused of using AI to write a passionate speech that suggests he could take over from Donald Trump as the next president.
McConaughey previously mused about running for Governor of Texas, although the Texas Tribune criticized him while claiming that he hasn't voted in a primary race since 'at least' 2012.

The 56-year-old actor confirmed he was considering running in the 2022 Texas gubernatorial election, although he later shared a video just weeks before the candidate deadline admitting he wasn't going to compete in the election.

McConaughey made his feelings clear when he joined a White House press briefing in the aftermath of the Uvalde school shooting, and when grilled on a potential future at the White House, he said: "We get pulled into things… It’s inevitable. I didn’t choose it, it chose me."
A seat behind the Resolute desk could be closer than ever, with McConaughey releasing a six-minute video to his X account that champions independent candidates.
Arguing that political independents have a place in the upcoming election, McConaughey said: "Independent does not mean you’re middle of the road. Independent is the original road. Before there was ever a Republican or Democrat, there was an American."
Saying he wants to bring back 'fairness and reality', he continued: "Independents belong in the fight. Not as a protest, not as a spoiler, but as a real and potential winner on the ballot and considered seriously by us."
McConaughey already has the support of former independent Senator Joe Manchin, who told NewsNation: "He has the ability. He’s smart, he’s charismatic, he’s able to communicate… He has all the qualities and all the ingredients that it takes to bring this country together."
Others were less convinced, with some left-leaning fans saying it's risky to consider independents in the midterms because it'll be splitting votes at a time Democrats are trying to take back control of Congress.
Away from this, there are allegations that McConaughey used ChatGPT to write his speech.
The Daily Wire's Matt Walsh took to X and pulled direct quotes that include, "That’s not indecision. It’s judgment" and, "That’s not competition. It’s a scrimmage.”

Walsh complained: "This is the most ChatGPT speech I've ever heard. Why? You're Matthew McConaughey. You have a very distinct and recognizable way of speaking. Why outsource that to AI? I don't get it."
He continued to call out the Dallas Buyers Club lead, alleging that LLMs have forced human communication to "become distinctly more bland, shallow, and cliche-ridden as people outsource their thoughts to AI."
Walsh concluded: "It's one thing to have AI do the things that it does better than humans. The problem is that people are having AI even do things that it DOESN'T do better than humans. That's the most ominous sign."
McConaughey doesn't appear to have responded to Walsh and the claims at the time of writing.
This wouldn't be McConaughey's first brush with AI, notably being an investor in the ElevenLabs audio startup. McConaughey authorized voice cloning technology to launch a Spanish-language edition of his "Lyrics of Livin'" newsletter, also investing an undisclosed sum as ElevenLabs has grown into a multi-billion-dollar company that's also signed Michael Caine.
Whether AI wrote McConaughey's speech or not, it's hard to argue with the numbers. A January 2026 poll from Gallup reported that a record 45% of Americans identified as politically independent in 2025, which is compared to just 27% each for Democrats and Republicans.
With everyone from Jimmy "Mr Beast" Donaldson to Soulja Boy potentially tipping their hat to a presidential run for the 2027 United States elections, it could be a who's who of familiar faces you wouldn't typically expect.
