A former Apple employee has explained the unavoidable impact each iOS update will have on your iPhone battery and why it happens.

TikToker Tyler Morgan shares his tech tips online, with his videos earning him 1.8 million followers on the app.

In a recent video, the ex-Apple worker shared his explanation for how the upcoming iOS 18.5 update could effect the battery life of your iPhone.

In the clip, he said: “Feel like your phone's getting a little slow? Well, if it’s not an iPhone 14 pro or higher, it is. Especially if you updated recently.

“Fun fact that people still claim is not true. Uh, your phone, if it’s older, does slow down with each update.”

Morgan continued: “Each update is meant for a different phone. Just because it’s optimized to work on a device that’s older doesn’t mean that it’s gonna run as well on that device.



“You might get iOS 18 and be like ‘man, my s*** is real laggy and your friend has an iPhone 16 and they’re like, ‘well it’s fine for me. No s***. They have a newer chip, better processor.”

So, which version of iOS should you run depending on which device you have? This TikToker has the answer.

He went on to say: “Let’s say you got a 6S. Best option - stay on iOS 13 or 14. Now, it goes up to 15 but just don’t.

“[iPhone] 7/7 Plus. Best is 14 again, avoid 15 and definitely avoid 16.”

For the iPhone 8 and X, Morgan believes that the best operating system to run is iOS 14 and 15.

He warns that 16 will work but ‘your battery is gonna drain’.

The TikToker continued: “iPhone 11, iOS 16 or 17. iPhone 12, iOS 17.

“For iPhone 13, just regular, do the 17, if you’ve got a 13 Pro, you can run iOS 18 but it’s gonna be slow, bit laggy.”

If you have an iPhone 14, the former Apple employee suggests using iOS 17 or 18 and for any device more recent then ‘iOS 18 should be fine as your default iOS’.

This video prompted many people to take to the comment section to share their own thoughts on the matter.

One user wrote: “Me watching with iphone xs on ios 18.”

Another said: “Rocking iphone 12 with 75% bh and ios 18.1.”

And a third person added: “I don’t think apple slow down iPhones, people don’t know how to look their battery health and they stay with below 80 battery health and they are wondering why their phones lagging...”
