With GLP-1 medication dominating the weight loss industry in recent years, some users are now sharing the various side effects they are experiencing.
And now, a new study has suggested that nail detachment is ‘more than four times as common among people taking GLP-1 receptor agonists’.
According to a report by EurekAlert!, the findings were presented at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Congress 2026, where it was revealed that 39% of GLP-1 users ‘reported nail detachment compared with 9% of controls, while 66% experienced at least one nail disorder’.
Study reveals alarming nail side effect of GLP-1 medication
In order to come to their conclusions, the team of researchers compared 575 GLP-1 users with 1,329 people with type 2 diabetes and/or obesity who had never taken the medication.

Study author Dr Charles Taïeb explained: “Until now, nail changes associated with GLP-1 therapies had essentially been anecdotal. Our findings show a clear association, but they also underline an important point: not everything that happens during GLP-1 treatment is necessarily caused by the treatment itself.”
People share their own side effect experiences with GLP-1 drugs
Nail detachment isn’t the only side effect people have been reporting since starting on the medication, with research presented at the same conference suggesting that 50% of GLP-1 users experienced unusual hair loss, in contrast with 34% in the control group.
Many GLP-1 users have taken to social media to share their own experiences, with one person writing on Reddit: “After taking a glp1 I had hair loss a couple months in sooo much worse than postpartum hair loss. I’ve been thinner than this in my life and ate way less protein than I did and my hair never fell out in clumps like it did on a triz compound. It also changed the texture, my hair became so dry and brittle and my normal hair products wouldn’t fix it like normal.

“I wish people could just admit it’s not weight loss but the medicine. I have friends who did not experience any hair loss, so it doesn’t happen to everyone, but it DOES happen. I pray they can come out with a glp1 that is hair loss free. Here’s to hoping.”
Another wrote: “This has been my experience as well. Not only massive shedding but dryness and brittleness too. It’s so depressing.”
And a third user added: “It is absolutely the med. I have been on it since August. No shed until I was on 7.5. My hair is falling out like crazy now. I have garbage can next to my desk .. every day I add another 30 strains to it. I lost 110 lbs about 10 years ago doing 1000 calories a day. No hair loss.”
