A shocking report has revealed which cities are the most vulnerable to climate disasters and have been dubbed ‘lucky’ to remain unscathed.

Certain cities around the world are considered to be ‘sitting ducks’ for natural disasters, according to a report by the Financial Times.

These locations include places like New York, Houston and Amsterdam, which are warned as being at risk of flooding.

Other cities such as Athens, Naples and Lisbon are also at risk of flooding as well as severe heatwaves.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Guillermo Rein, who is a fire sciences professor at Imperial College London, said: “At the global level, they are becoming more probable. In the next year there’s going to be a big wildfire destroying a big community.

“But we have absolutely no idea where that is going to happen.”

But how do we know that some places are more at risk than others? Well, these disasters have happened before.

Athens, Greece

Athens narrowly avoided a huge disaster in August 2024 when a wildfire broke out in the outskirts of the city.

With no rain in sight, the fire quickly spread in the heat of summer and burned through a whopping 40 square miles of land.

One woman was killed in the fire while thousands more fled their homes.

Luckily, the fire stopped just short of the city, otherwise further destruction could have occurred.

Experts believe that if the wind had been blowing in a different direction, it could have had a disastrous outcome for Athens.

Dallas, Texas

In the US, Dallas is considered to be a city that is a ‘sitting duck’ to the elements as it is under the threat of flooding.

This is in part due to the fast growth that the city is experiencing, with planners adding in concrete and asphalt to areas, which means the land can’t absorb water.

This means that when the city experiences heavy rains, Dallas often ends up in a flash flood.

A particularly bad example of this is back in 2022, when the city had 38 cm of rain in just 24 hours.

The area experienced such a huge flooding that homes were submerged and cars were swept away by the water.

Valencia, Spain

Across the Atlantic Ocean, Valencia is another city that is at risk of flooding.

Last year, the area fell victim to devastating floods, which some scientists believe was due to climate change.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Dr Friederike Otto, who is the head of the World Weather Attribution at the Centre for Environmental Policy, Imperial College London, said: “No doubt about it, these explosive downpours were intensified by climate change.”

The UK

Cities around the UK are at risk of being damaged by wildfires due to an unusually warm spring.

A major factor for some of these cities is the fact that a lot of them are in close proximity to the wilderness.

Since the start of the year, over 113 square miles of land has been scorched by wildfires across the UK.
