Patagonia – the natural geographical region spanning parts of Argentina and Chile – has found itself in the crosshairs of big tech, as major companies eye up one of the world's most valuable natural habitats as a new home for massive data centers.
People naturally have taken an aversion to this news as it continues to reemphasize the threat that AI and evolving technologies pose to the environment, with continued and rapid expansion only accelerating climate change as we pass by vital 'tipping points'.
While data centers are cropping up all across the world, as large parts of the United States are now flooded with infrastructure for advanced technology, big tech companies have began to look towards the rest of the world for new suitable locations.
That's where Patagonia appeared to score strongly, yet their efforts could face opposition from indigenous populations and wider environmental activists, with many questioning whether the environmental cost of these plans are even close to matching their supposed benefits in the future.
Why Patagonia is seen as the ideal location for data centers
As reported by Reuters, new reforms from Argentinian President Javier Milei have opened up the door for tech investment in the region, with many companies looking at Patagonia with big plans in mind.

What these data centers look to harness can largely be split into four different sections, with access to renewable energy and shale gas understandably a major boon, alongside the wide stretches of empty land seemingly perfect in their eyes for massive data center projects.

In addition to this, the data centers – which are known for producing an alarming amount of heat – would theoretically be able to benefit from the region's cool temperatures, lowering the cost of cooling as a result.
There remain a few hurdles when it comes to infrastructure and connectivity, however, with high interest not necessarily reflecting action when it comes to concrete projects so far — with some companies potentially waiting to see if Milei is re-elected before proceeding due to his overwhelming support of these plans.
One of the largest proposed data centers comes from Pampa Energia, one of the country's largest electricity generators, and plans outline how this would consume up to 500 megawatts of energy from a major shale gas formation nearby known as Vaca Muerta.
What have people said about the proposed plans?
It is expected that the Mapuche Indigenous families that live in rural areas within Patagonia will attempt to oppose or resist plans to build data centers, including the aforementioned infrastructure from Pampa Energia which would directly impact them due to proximity.

That same opposition has extended to social media too, with many worried that these plans could 'destroy' one of the world's most valuable natural habitats for little actual benefit.
"Leave Patagonia to nature," wrote one commenter on Reddit. "It is amazing and beautiful and doesn't need mega data centers."
One commented lamented the potential loss of "one of the most beautiful places in the worlds," with another proclaiming that "it brings zero jobs and causes a thousand issues, injuring our nature and our people."
