Samsung could be on the verge of announcing a major new smartphone, as a new email from the South Korean tech giant promises a 'category-defining' announcement in the near future.
There are few things more exciting than a fresh piece of tech, as a shiny new gadget is bound to make what you already have seem inadequate and old in comparison.
While we're still months away from a new iPhone, and rumors surrounding the potential for a folding Apple device appear to be years away, Samsung might just have an ace up their sleeve that could help them dominate the smartphone market.

As reported by the Mirror, Samsung have just sent out emails to some of the company's loyal customers suggesting that a 'category-defining' announcement that is 'light years' ahead of current offerings will be announced soon.

The email reveals that "our brand new Galaxy smartphone is almost here," adding that it's the "next category defining smartphone. Light years ahead."
With the Galaxy S25 lineup only releasing in February earlier this year, it's unlikely to be a completely new release, and all signs appear to point towards one clear option.

First shown back in January, many believe that the soon to be announced mystery tech will be the Galaxy S25 Edge, which is a thinner revision of the current flagship at just 5.8mm compared to the S25 Ultra's 8.2mm width.
It's not to be confused with older Samsung Galaxy models that also featured the 'Edge' name, as this simply refers to the thin nature of the device as opposed to the rounded screen edges seen in older versions.
While it's thin design is certain to catch the attention of many, one user on Reddit has pointed out what people should really be focusing on instead:
"Samsung should be advertizing this phone for its weight, not its thinness," they argue. "It weighs 163 grams, which is significantly lighter than other phones with the same screen size (my S21+ is 200 grams)."

This would definitely make a big difference to the feel of using the phone, especially in one hand, although that weight and size reduction has seemingly come at a cost.
"What I find incomprehensible is that Samsung green lit this project with such a small battery in such a big phone and they didn't bother with [silicone carbon] batteries," another comment writes.

Specs appear to point toward the S25 Edge's battery being just 4,000 mAh, which is 900 mAh less than the S25+'s offering despite having a similar screen size and processing capabilities.
That's likely to leave you with far less screen time on your device while at the same time potentially costing you more overall - yet for some the looks and feel might be worth the sacrifice.
If you're someone who's willing to take the plunge - or simply someone who wants to take advantage of a great deal - you can in fact put down a $50 deposit on the 'unannounced' device in order to save $100 from the overall price.
