Blu-ray owners to face unexpected price hikes due to new Trump rules

Physical media fans are sounding the alarm

Blu-ray collectors need to brace for potential price increases under President Donald Trump's new tariffs.

Recent changes to US import policies have consumers and businesses worried about widespread price hikes.

While some experts advise consumers to make planned purchases sooner rather than later, others are taking a wait-and-see approach to assess the actual impact.

Meanwhile, the passage of the GENIUS Act has established regulatory frameworks for a new cryptocurrency, providing more clarity for digital currency markets in the wake of new policies.

Now, Reddit has become a hotbed of predictions about how Trump's new trade policies might affect the Blu-ray community.

"Any thoughts on the coming tariffs if they will affect Blu-rays and/or figure prices ?" one Reddit user asked.

Another post, that has since been removed, warned: "Be prepared to pay even more for imported discs.”

Community responses have been mixed.

Some users remain optimistic, with one noting: "R1 Blu-rays unlikely. Most North American companies use American-based disc replicators.

"Even if there is a 25% increase on the cost of raw discs that works out to pennies per DVD and maybe a dime on Blu-rays as the replicator may be paying duty on the cost of the blank disc."

Another user pointed to an existing trade agreement, replying: "Not too worried. The USA already has reciprocity agreements with Japanese and British imports. So long as you don't go above certain dollar amounts you have no import duties.”

However, more pessimistic voices warned that consumers are to get 'quite literally hit in everything we purchase.'

One Reddit user bluntly put: "Best guess is that we don't know."

Naturally, there's no clear answer yet as services are still trying to figure out what kind of changes or disruptions might come up.

CBS News already reported that multiple carriers in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Italy have announced the suspension of most package shipments to the US, citing unclear guidance on new import duty requirements.

At the same time, the gaming community has experienced price adjustments.

Sony recently announced increases across the PlayStation 5 lineup in the United States, with the standard console now priced at $549.99, the Digital Edition at $500, and the PlayStation 5 Pro reaching $750 (all up by $50). These increases come at a time when anticipation is building for major upcoming releases.

Nintendo essentially confirmed what gamers have been dreading when it slapped an $80 price tag on Mario Kart World back in June. Finally, the GTA VI rumours floating around about $100+ prices won't be helping anyone sleep better at night.
