Many have been left shocked at the contents found inside millions of files related to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and several governments have announced investigations into prominent figures and the deceased financier's actions as a consequence.
While having your name mentioned within the Epstein files is in no way an admission of guilt or involvement in criminal activity, there are seemingly a number of incredibly powerful figures both in the public and private world that forged connections with the financier.
For example, Elon Musk's emails with Epstein between 2012 and 2014 were 'exposed', although the tech mogul denies having any actual involvement and claims he never visited the island despite his apparent desire within the messages, and a number of horrifying accusations have emerged surrounding Bill Gates that his ex-wife has now had to respond to.
Key to the revelations unveiled within the files though are Epstein's links to government figures across the world, many of whom still play an active role in the politics of their respective nations.

As reported by the Independent, that has prompted several countries to open investigations, with others under pressure to do so following analysis of the latest information. Here are all of the countries that have opened investigations so far:
- United Kingdom
- France
- Norway
- Poland
- Latvia
- Lithuania
Alongside this, Germany, Turkey, and Ireland are all either weighing up the possibility of opening investigations or are facing pressure to do so right now, suggesting that there could be more under the microscope in the near future.
Peter Mandelson, former ambassador to the United States, is now under investigation from the UK police for alleged misconduct in office following the reveal that he had remained in contact with Epstein following his arrest, alongside questions surrounding leaking of government business.
Similar action is happening in Norway as former foreign minister Thorbjorn Jagland, ex-foreign minister Børge Brende, and prominent ambassador Mona Juul have all faced criticism for their correspondence with Epstein, with the former two under police investigation and Juul facing internal pressure following a suspension last week.

Additionally, both ex-French culture minister Jack Lang and his daughter Caroline are now subject to an investigation from financial crime prosecutors after being suspected of 'aggravated tax fraud laundering' in connection to Epstein, as files show financial links including offshore accounts.
Finally, governments and prosecutors in Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania are all investigating the possibility of children, young girls, and women being trafficked in connection with Epstein's activities.
One key aspect that remains under strong contention within the United States is the continued redaction of Epstein's associates and coconspirators, as victims have called for their names to be made public, especially as they themselves weren't afforded the same luxury from the Department of Justice.
