Trump orders U.S. government to rename artificial intelligence to 'Super Intelligence'
President Donald Trump has made a shocking remark about artificial intelligence during an address at the UN General Assembly today (22 September) where he appears to be insisting on a rebrand.
The US leader is currently at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City where today (September 22), he spoke about AI and a new name he wishes the technology to be referred to as going forward.
During his address, Trump said: “From this point forward, all of United States documents, and hopefully the world’s, will be changed to use the much more accurate term ‘super’ as opposed to artificial. So it’s superintelligence.”
The president went on to state that the US government would ‘only encourage super intelligence’ when it comes to the expansion of AI, adding: “We’re going to encourage it, not rein it in.”

Trump continued: “The United States leads the world in superintelligence and will continue to do so safely and responsibly. Americans have never been a nation that retreats from a frontier or shrinks from a challenge, no matter how great or how daunting that challenge may be.”
Experts fear damaging risks of AI
Despite multiple alarm bells being raised by experts in the field, Trump appears set on pushing for the development of AI.
He claimed that ‘every major new technology brings challenges, and superintelligence is no exception’, comparing the term ‘AI’ to ‘global warming’ to suggest pushback is ideologically driven.
Trump went on to say: “Yet the very same people who said we’ll all be dead in 12 years because of global warming, a name since reborn to climate change, because the planet was cooling, not warming, and nobody was dead, these are the same people that are now saying that AI is going to kill us all, that robots are going to attack us, and that everything is going to be a total disaster. Same group of people.”
Earlier this month, Trump dismissed concerns about the risks of AI, stating: “You have a lot of very negative forces that are bringing it up that shouldn’t be bringing it up and they’re bringing up things that won’t happen.”
Tech boss warns AI industry should slow down
This came after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei shared a new essay where he warned that the ‘AI industry should slow down’, adding that AI ‘swarms’ could take over the internet in as soon as six months.
The warning from Amodei was met with support from other figures in the industry, with Elon Musk writing on X, formerly Twitter: “Dario is right.”
Meanwhile, OpenAI’s Sam Altman added: “I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier. This has been a primary topic of discussions we’ve had at OpenAI in recent weeks. Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same. We’ll have more to share soon.”
