Elon Musk’s enormous spending spree ahead of the US midterm elections has become the latest target of late-night comedy, with The Daily Show delivering a particular punchline at the billionaire’s expense.
Comedian Michael Kosta took aim at the Tesla and SpaceX boss while discussing the results of this week’s midterms elections, which resulted in a resounding victory for Democrats, who have taken control of Congress.
In the clip posted to YouTube, Kosta pointed out that despite reportedly pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into the election, Musk failed to secure the political outcomes he had been hoping for.

He joked: “Poor Elon. Half a billion dollars and absolutely nothing to show for it. That could have been three whole days of child support for him.”
The comedian was referring to Musk’s reported $500 million investment in political campaigns, which ultimately failed to deliver the victories he wanted.
Kosta went on to say: “Although I’d like to thank him for making the rest of us look great with money, right? Now when my wife is mad that I bought that new WaveRunner I can be like, ‘Well at least I didn’t spend $500 million trying to get a sloppy pervert elected in Texas’.”
Midterm elections resulted in failure for Republican candidates backed by Elon Musk
The world’s richest man had spent hundreds of millions of dollars supporting Republican political action committees (PACs) during the midterm election cycle but proved to be unsuccessful when voters across the nation took to the polls.
Musk spent roughly $212 million directly supporting James Talarico’s opponent, Republican Ken Paxton, in the Texas Senate campaign.
Overall, the tech mogul threw a whopping $445 million to $474 million behind the campaigns of Republican candidates during the midterm elections. According to a report by the Guardian, this makes Musk the biggest single-cycle political donor in modern US history.

However, on the night, it appeared that all that spending was for nothing as Talarico made history by becoming the first Democratic senator of Texas since 1988.
The election results have raised questions about just how much influence even the world’s wealthiest people can actually buy when voters head to the polls.
And, judging by Kosta’s reaction, Musk’s huge fortune might not be quite the political superpower he hoped it would be.
Musk even reacted to the news himself on X, writing: “Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time.”
