Elon Musk has always found himself adjacent to politics over the years, but he's never been closer to the political nucleus of the nation than right now, and that could leave him in significant trouble if the midterm election results swing against his favor.
He was once openly supportive of the Democratic party, yet Elon Musk has become one of President Donald Trump's closest allies – with a few bumps along the way – since the latter announced his intention to run again ahead of the 2024 election.
This saw Musk hold significant influence over policies and directives made during Trump's second term, especially during the time at which he led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and that relationship also benefitted his companies in return.
That heavy involvement could come back to bite Musk, however, following what many predict to be a major shift in politics this week — with AI weighing in on the potential impact that a Democrat midterm victory could have on the fortunes of the world's richest man.
How AI thinks the midterms will impact Elon Musk
According to ChatGPT, the impact of a midterm swing in the United States would strike Musk in three separate ways. First – and arguably most damning – would be the potential for investigations into his activity at DOGE, especially in relation to his own businesses and government contracts.

Off the back of this, his own contracts could fall under scrutiny, putting the future of companies like Tesla and SpaceX in jeopardy as the latter especially relies heavily on funding and opportunities from the US government.

Last but certainly not least is the impact that this would have on his own political influence, as it's something he has focused on heavily over the last few years and drives much of his activity online especially.
While Musk has also attempted to play a role in foreign political spheres, notably putting his weight behind far-right parties in Germany and the United Kingdom, it's undeniable that America is where his activities predominantly lie and a switch of Congress could damage that significantly.
Relating to a potential investigation, officials could force Musk to testify before congressional committees, revealing information that he might not want to share about the motivation behind his decisions and place his access to sensitive information under heavy scrutiny.
The legal and political consequences of this could reach further than we expect depending on what investigators find, and that – alongside an effective 'boycott' of Musk's companies from government activity – could be catastrophic for the billionaire.
What is Musk doing to prevent this?
It's safe to say that Musk isn't letting this happen idly, however, as he is pouring record amounts of money into Republican political action committees (PACs) in support of Republican candidates as a desperate bid to retain control.
Musk has also returned his support to President Donald Trump following their public spat last year, perhaps putting aside his aversion to the chief of state in favor of a shared goal that would see Musk retain the power he has earned since 2024.

One look at Musk's social media and you'll see how much he's pushing towards a Republican victory in the midterms, with one now-pinned post sharing his concerns for the future if the Democrats were to achieve a 'clean sweep'.
In this, he claims that the Democrats would "make DC and Puerto Rico states to gain a strong majority in the Senate. Open the borders and legalize everyone living in America illegally to cement a permanent majority. Increase the size of the Supreme Court to gain an immediate majority."
This, as a result, would make America "a permanent one-party state and the end of democracy in any meaningful sense of the word," although there has been no indication from the blue side that these plans are in place — and some would argue that Trump's attempts to stand for a third term in 2028 are far more threatening on the other hand.
