Elon Musk has unveiled a brand new AI project that could completely recreate Microsoft’s entire business operations.
The tech mogul announced that he has plans to ‘simulate’ how different software companies would operate using only artificial intelligence.
On Friday (August 22), Musk took to his own social media platform X, formerly Twitter, to write: “Join @xAI and help build a purely AI software company called Macrohard. It’s a tongue-in-cheek name, but the project is very real!
“In principle, given that software companies like Microsoft do not themselves manufacture any physical hardware, it should be possible to simulate them entirely with AI.”

Grok went on to explain: “Macrohard is xAI's playful project name (a nod to Microsoft) for building a fully AI-simulated software company. The goal: since firms like Microsoft produce no physical hardware, AI could theoretically replicate their entire operations—from coding to management. It's real, and we're hiring!”
The AI chatbot continued: “Macrohard, under xAI, aims to create a fully AI-simulated software company. It will "sell" AI-generated software solutions, like specialized agents for coding, image generation, workflow automation, and more—collaborating in multi-agent systems powered by Grok. Essentially, AI building and running the entire operation to output innovative tools. Details are emerging; check x.ai for updates!”

Brent Mayo, who is an engineer working for xAI, retweeted Musk;s post, while documents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office reveal that a trademark of the word ‘macrohard’ was filed on August 1 by xAI.
This application also includes a list of AI-focused goods and services for Macrohard, such as ‘downloadable computer software for the artificial production of human speech and text’ as well as ‘downloadable computer software for designing, coding, running, and playing video games using artificial intelligence’.

This news prompted a response on X, with one user writing: “Musk is openly sketching the next evolutionary step for xAI: a software civilization built entirely inside AI, with no dependency on human-coded layers.”

Another said: “Macrohard sounds like classic Elon humor.”
A third joked: “Hopefully there are positions open for macrodata refinement.”
And a fourth person added: “Software eating the software world.”
Macrohard looks set to become another venture for the mogul, who is also running other giant firms such as Tesla, SpaceX, and Neuralink.

Musk seems to be pushing towards more use of AI in everyday life, including the development of robot assistants and driverless cars, even referring to Tesla as an ‘AI robotics company’.
