With so many new features and tweaks included in a major iOS revision it's only inevitable that bugs slip through the cracks, and a small but still noticeable number of iPhone owners appeared to be encountering freezes and crashes after downloading this month's update.
Unlike most issues, having your iPhone freeze or crash can make using the device incredibly difficult — and you never know when it could hit you when you're out and about, making things like Apple Pay or accessing tickets a real pain.
Thankfully Apple has now released a hot fix that patches the major issue, giving those suffering from the frustrating bug a way to fix the issue and get back to normal once again.
It appears to have been caused by an issue with Face ID authentication, specifically impacting both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max devices.

The update itself released this week on Monday, September 28, with iOS 27.0.1 now available for download and installation if you have one of the applicable devices.
How to download the new iOS update on iPhone
Some iPhone owners might be automatically prompted to download the new update after a couple of days, but if you're suffering from crashes and freezing you'll definitely want to get it installed as quickly as possible.
To do so, make sure to follow these steps and get your phone working as it should again:
- Head into the Settings app
- Select the General option
- Navigate to the Software Update section
- Tap on Update Now to start the process

It's best to do this when connected to Wi-Fi and plugged into a charger to ensure that no issues arise during the update process, and you'll also want to make sure that you've got enough space to download the update.
It is 'only' 1.21 GB in size, but given the sheer number of photos and videos that some people have on their devices, you might need to take advantage of a few temporary tricks to free up enough room on your device.
What other bugs have been fixed in the update?
According to the update's patch notes, iOS 27.0.1 has also fixed two other bugs that appeared in the original download, with one seemingly having the potential to impact all devices.
First up though is another issue that's exclusive to the 18 Pro and Pro Max, as it appears as if some devices experienced a color artifact on certain photos captured with the 2x zoom option.

This appears to have only impacted images captured at f/1.48 on a small number of devices, but it could be the thing that stops you from achieving the perfect shot when you've paid all that money for a new phone.
Additionally, all devices have ran the risk of encountering a bug that causes the touchscreen to become unresponsive, and this appears to be triggered by opening both the Notification Center and Control Center simultaneously.
Even if you've not been impacted by any of these three issues, it's definitely a good idea to download and install the new update as soon as possible, because there's always the chance they could hit you at some point.
