Apple finally fixes 17-year iPhone volume issue with iOS 27 drop
After first announcing iOS 27 earlier this year, Apple has brought in a new feature that finally fixes an iPhone volume issue fans have been begging the company for years to address.
Today (September 14) marks the official release of the tech giant’s new operating system upgrade, known as iOS 27 and with it comes a whole host of new additions.
And one feature in particular is causing quite a buzz after Apple is finally bringing in something that Android users have been able to do for years.
The feature in question is the ability to control the device’s ringtone, alarm and notification volumes separately.

The change has quietly appeared in Apple’s upcoming iOS 27 update, giving users considerably more control over how loud their iPhone gets for different types of alerts.
If you’re running the iOS 27 developer beta, the new options can be found by heading to Settings, followed by Sounds & Haptics, where there is now a ‘Match Ringtone Volume’ setting, which can be switched off to separate the controls.
Once this is disabled, users can adjust the volume for alarms and system alerts independently rather than having everything tied to the same setting.
However, there is one slightly confusing exception because the new alarm control doesn’t change the volume of the Wake-Up alarm, which is handled separately through Apple’s Bedtime settings.
It might sound like a tiny change but this addresses an iPhone quirk that has been around for a very long time. Apple’s first iPhone arrived in 2007, meaning users have spent almost two decades without this particular level of control.
Many people have taken to social media to react to the news, with one user writing on X, formerly Twitter: “I HAVE BEEN BEGGING FOR THIS.”
Over on Reddit, another said: “What a welcome and overdue change finally. I hope the ability to use fully custom notification sounds for individual apps on a system level is next.”
A third person commented: “Still not an actual mixer, yet it’s better than before.”
The drop comes just days after Apple unveiled its latest range of iPhone models and its ‘Surprise and shine’ event last week.
During the annual event, the company revealed the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max as well as its first ever foldable phone, known as the iPhone Duo.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are now available for pre-order, with the devices set to be released this Friday (September 18).
The wait for the iPhone Duo will be slightly longer as pre-order will begin on October 16, with availability beginning Friday, October 23.
