Stranger Things creators' new horror series is coming to Netflix in March

Turning their recent controversy 'upside down'

Where did things go wrong for Stranger Things?

While Netflix's nostalgic sci-fi series remained a ratings hit and continued to break records across its five-season run, the critical response was something of a different story.

Even though it managed to avoid the same critiques as some people awarding Game of Thrones the 'worst' final season of all time, Stranger Things' final batch of episodes was marred by controversy.

Away from behind-the-scenes drama with bullying accusations and claims that characters were cut due to actors having cancer, season 5 volume 2 was critiqued for 'queerbaiting' and a general feeling that the Duffer Brothers didn't know what they were doing.

Matt and Ross Duffer have waded through this quagmire of controversy, and despite calling for viewers to cut them some slack, those ever-angry fans are like a dog with a bone. Hoping to leave the whole Stranger Things debacle behind them, they're already looking ahead to their proposed live-action spin-off, as well as several other projects as part of an overall deal with Netflix.

Although the Duffer Brothers' adaptation of Stephen King's notoriously tricky The Talisman has been axed, 2026 sees them return to the streaming giant to executive produce the animated Stranger Things: Tales from '85, a live-action show called The Boroughs, and the mysterious Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen.

What is Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen about?

Netflix has just given us its first look at Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, which looks like a suitably spooky affair that stars Death Wish's Camila Morrone, The White Lotus' Adam DiMarco, The Hateful Eight's Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Silence of the Lambs' Ted Levine, and more.

Created by screenwriter Haley Z. Boston, she pitched the idea to the Duffer Brothers, who quickly snapped it up.

Netflix has revealed the first plot details and pictures for Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, which is described as a mix between Carrie and Rosemary's Baby. Following Rachel (Morrone) and Nicky (DiMarco) in the week leading up to the wedding, the clue is in the title that something 'very bad' gets in their way.

Promising a character-driven story, Boston says it won't be about jump scares but will instead focus on "unsettling, getting-under-your-skin dread."

It's said that Rachela and Nicky will have to battle their own fears of commitment while also dealing with a "deliciously fresh horror twist."

When does Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen release?

As is typical with most Netflix outings, all eight episodes of Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen will be available at once. For those who've had their interest piqued and want to try something a little different from Stranger Things, the series is hitting the streaming service on March 26.

While there’s still a lot of discourse surrounding Stranger Things online, the potential of a new horror series and a promising premise seems to have most saying they'll give this one a go.
