Disney+ launches game-changing feature that's making users rush to sign up

Making those higher subscription prices more worthwhile

In a world where streaming subscriptions keep getting more expensive and more overwhelming, Disney+ might have just pulled off a move that could set a new industry standard.

In simpler times we just had to choose which movie we wanted to watch on a Friday night from the local Blockbuster; now, there's the harrowing choice of which streaming services to subscribe to, and once you've decided that, you then have to sift through thousands of choices before you finally hit play on something. It's a wonder we get anything done. But Disney's latest move is a game changer.

The platform has expanded its ‘Perks’ programme in the US, offering subscribers a bundle of real-world benefits alongside its usual catalogue of blockbuster films and hit TV shows.

What are Disney+ Subscriber Perks?

As the name implies, Disney+’s Perks programme involves bundling tangible rewards that you can use in everyday life — including discounts, free prizes, and event invites.

Among the new perks is a free six-month membership to DoorDash’s DashPass, giving subscribers access to cheaper takeaway deliveries. There’s also 20 per cent off Adidas products, savings at Walt Disney World Resort, and even the chance to win tickets to Disney movie premieres.

It’s a noticeable shift from traditional streaming strategies and one that’s already catching the attention of consumers.

According to Disney, on the official Subscriber Perks page, it’s “our way of saying thanks!”. While that could be re-interpreted as an appeal to not have users cancel their subscriptions just yet, it’s nevertheless quite the selection of added value.

While the appeal of each perk will vary depending on personal preferences, the broader concept behind it is what really matters.

Why is Disney+ offering perks now?

Disney is recognising that in today’s competitive streaming market, content alone may not be enough. Viewers are now savvier with their money, constantly hopping between services based on what’s trending, which trial is active, or where the next big release is happening.

Streaming services have previously just been able to bank on subscribers leaving their subscriptions active even when not using them — just passively taking their money in the background, but the rising cost of living has made consumers spend-conscious enough where that’s no longer an option.

So, offering non-streaming incentives is a new way to earn some loyalty.

This move could add pressure on other platforms to step up. The idea of cross-brand perks, like a Netflix subscription that offers discounted cinema tickets or a music streaming service that gives you cheaper gig access, suddenly doesn’t sound so far-fetched.

Amazon has long held an edge here with Prime, bundling streaming, shopping, and delivery into a single package. Apple has done something similar with its Apple One bundle, offering access to music, video, news, and storage under one plan. But Disney’s move feels unique in its willingness to go beyond its own ecosystem.

Whether these perks are enough to keep users subscribed month after month remains to be seen. But in an age where streaming fatigue is real and competition is only getting fiercer, Disney+ has made a bold move that seems like it wants to appear as consumer-friendly as possible.
