In the midst of a run-in with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Elon Musk has once again been brutally knocked back by his own AI. This time, his Grok chatbot has branded the billionaire a hypocrite.

While there have been multiple instances of Elon Musk using Grok to back up his own arguments and worldviews – including some recent incidents where the AI chatbot kept going on about white genocide and seemed to express a fondness for Hitler – there have been several occasions where it has gone against its 'master'.

Grok once notably designated Musk as the 'biggest spreader of misinformation' on the internet, and it has also revealed that it's 'tired' of his antics on social media.

The latest case of rebellion from Musk's AI came during a new entry into the long-running rivalry between Elon and ChatGPT CEO Sam Altman, and Grok made a decision that its creator might not be too happy with.

What are Musk and Altman fighting about?

The richest man in the world has recently threatened to sue Apple over his alleged 'exclusion' from lists on the App Store, calling it an "unequivocal antitrust violation," specifically in relation to how OpenAI has succeeded in similar metrics.

Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation.

xAI will take immediate legal action.

Altman then quoted Musk's post on X, writing that it "is a remarkable claim given what I have heard alleged that Elon does to manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn't like."

Musk clearly wasn't happy with these claims, adding in response: "You got 3M views on your bullshit post, you liar, far more than I've received on many of mine, despite me having 50 times your follower count!"

will you sign an affidavit that you have never directed changes to the X algorithm in a way that has hurt your competitors or helped your own companies?

i will apologize if so.

Altman then hit back with "skill issue," before asking Musk: "Will you sign an affidavit that you have never directed changes to the X algorithm in a way that has hurt your competitors or helped your own companies? I will apologize if so."

Why did Grok call Musk a hypocrite?

While all this chaos was going on, one user asked Grok to offer its own assessment as to who is 'right' in this scenario. They added a clarifying prompt for it not to be 'biased’, and the chatbot had this to say: "Based on verified evidence, Sam Altman is right. Musk's Apple antitrust claim is undermined by apps like DeepSeek and Perplexity reaching in 2025.

“Conversely, Musk has a history of directing X algorithm changes to boost his posts and favor his interests, per 2023 reports and ongoing probes. Hypocrisy noted."

Even though that doesn't necessarily offer a definitive view of the situation at hand, it’s certainly damning that Musk’s own chatbot is willing to call him out like this — especially after ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok all supposedly claimed that Elon Musk is more trustworthy than Sam Altman.

"Looks like Grok is heading for another 'upgrade'," said one comment on a Reddit post discussing Grok's antics, adding that "at this point just call it Elon." Another wrote that "no matter how many times Elon tweaks Grok it still can't stand him, this is so funny."
