It's hard to believe it's been 12 years since Robin Williams left us, with the legendary funnyman leaving a hole in Hollywood that many still haven't recovered from. Having worked the comedy scene, Williams' big break came in Mork & Mindy, before he went on to star in everything from Good Morning, Vietnam to Jumanji, Mrs. Doubtfire to Aladdin. As well as earning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Good Will Hunting, Williams was immortalized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, had a posthumous role in Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, and even appeared more recently when unused archive records as Aladdin's Genie were used for 2023's Once Upon a Studio.
As the legacy of Williams continues to loom large, his own children have revived his Instagram and have a message for his fans in 2026.
Why have Robin Williams' children reactivated his Instagram in 2026?

With the rise of artificial intelligence, there's been a notable increase in AI videos using Williams' likeness, while his signature vocals are also being ripped off to try and bring the late actor back to life.

Zelda Williams has previously taken to social media to plead with fans to stop sending her these videos, as while they might think they're honoring her father, they actually come across as distasteful.
As AI videos of Will Smith eating spaghetti continue to show, this kind of tech is becoming more advanced by the day, and with it, it's easier than ever to digitally resurrect Williams.
Posting on their dad's Instagram, a united message from Zak, Zelda, and Cody Williams celebrated what would've been his 75th birthday on July 21. The trio explained: "We’re grateful to see new generations discovering his work while longtime fans continue to celebrate the joy he brought into their lives.”
"As technology evolves, we want this to be a safe, trusted place where the stories, photos, videos, and memories shared reflect his legacy with authenticity, warmth, and care."
Vowing to honor his unique talent and way of sharing humor with the world, Williams' children said the page will be kept online to showcase moments that made them and so many others laugh. The statement concluded by reminding us: "He continues to inspire us and delight people all over the world."
Zelda Williams criticizes using AI to recreate her father

Although there's no direct mention of AI in the statement, the mention of Williams' Instagram remaining a 'trusted place' feels like shots fired at the amount of misinformation that AI is filling our timelines with.
Back in October 2025, Zelda Williams posted on her Instagram story and said: "Please, just stop sending me AI videos of Dad. Stop believing I wanna see it or that I’ll understand, I don’t and I won’t. If you’re just trying to troll me, I’ve seen way worse, I’ll restrict and move on."
Pleading for those with 'decency' to stop, she referred to it as a waste of energy and reiterated it's not something Robin himself would approve of.
Zelda said watching the legacies of real people being turned into 'TikTok slop' was 'maddening' and added: "You’re not making art, you’re making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings, out of the history of art and music, and then shoving them down someone else’s throat hoping they’ll give you a little thumbs up and like it. Gross."
In 2023, the Lisa Frankenstein director shared a Screen Actors Guild’s campaign against AI and vented: "These recreations are, at their very best, a poor facsimile of greater people, but at their worst, a horrendous Frankensteinian monster, cobbled together from the worst bits of everything this industry is, instead of what it should stand for."
Examples of AI videos depicting Robin Williams have typically been created with OpenAI's short-lived Sora. These include him speaking to a younger version of his Good Will Hunting character, Sean Maguire. Others showcase a fictionalized award ceremony where he chats with Betty White, and particularly heartbreaking ones of him offering advice from beyond the grave.
With Williams' kids clearly being bombarded by this kind of content, it's not hard to see why they've taken this stance and want to keep his actual Instagram a real place to honor his very real talent.
