Scientists have uncovered groundbreaking new evidence that the Big Bang theory might be wrong.

While the theory has been widely accepted for decades as an explanation for the origins of our universe.

However, everything we know about how the universe began might soon change after a team of physicists discovered new evidence.

The team, which is led by the University of Portsmouth’s Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, have now suggested that our universe might actually be sitting inside a massive black hole.

According to the theory, which has been coined as the Black Hole Universe, matter within the black hole was crushed before huge amounts of energy caused it to spring back. This became our universe.

The research was published in the journal Physical Review D and suggests that rather than a beginning, the origin of our universe is part of a continuation of a cosmic cycle.

Many people have taken to social media to share their own thoughts on the new theory.

On Reddit, one user wrote: “It’s just answering for OUR universe, not the one where the ‘parent’ black hole is, which might be inside another universe with another ‘parent’ black hole etc.”

Another said: “News like this always gives me anxiety whenever I think about how big the space is. Am I the only one?”

A third person joked: “Finally explains why I feel like I’m constantly being crushed by existential gravity. It’s not depression…it’s physics!”

And a fourth added: “Does that mean I don't have to go to work tomorrow?”

According to a report by the Telegraph, Professor Enrique Gaztañaga said: “We’ve shown that gravitational collapse does not have to end in a singularity and found that a collapsing cloud of matter can reach a high-density state and then bounce, rebounding outward into a new expanding phase.

“What emerges on the other side of the bounce is a universe remarkably like our own. Even more surprisingly, the rebound naturally produces a phase of accelerated expansion driven not by a hypothetical field but by the physics of the bounce itself.

“We now have a fully worked-out solution that shows the bounce is not only possible - it’s inevitable under the right conditions.”

Gaztañaga added: “In contrast to the famous singularity theorems by Penrose and Hawking, which assume that matter can be compressed indefinitely, we rely on the fact that quantum physics places fundamental limits on how much matter can be compressed.

“The Black Hole Universe also offers a new perspective on our place in the cosmos. In this framework, our entire observable universe lies inside the interior of a black hole formed in some larger ‘parent’ universe.

“We are not special. We are not witnessing the birth of everything from nothing, but rather the continuation of a cosmic cycle – one shaped by gravity, quantum mechanics, and the deep interconnections between them.”
