Ozempic user warns of worrying mental health side effect

Other users of GLP-1 medication have said the weight loss drug has changed their taste buds

An Ozempic user is warning others about a potentially worrying mental health side effect of taking the weight loss drug.

Weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have been taking the world by storm, with users experiencing life changing results.

Plenty of celebrities have jumped on the bandwagon with the likes of Elon Musk, Oprah Winfrey and Kelly Clarkson openly admitting to taking these types of medication.

However, some users have been reporting various side effects from taking the drug, including a change in their taste buds.

Taking to social media, many people have found that their experiences have similarities with others and now, one user has shared a potentially worrying side effect that GLP-1 medications might have on someone’s mental health.

On Reddit, the user wrote: “Has anyone noticed depression and not motivated since taking the shot. I’m 5 months old and I’m very unmotivated and can't get out of bed. I have never had depression this bad and started about 2 weeks after the shot. It's so bad that I can spend all day in bed. I have just read that depression can be a side effect and my doctor wants to put me on depression meds. That I'm not comfortable. I would love some insights.”

This prompted a response from another user, who explained: “Depression is a known side effect of glps. Assuming your doctor is qualified and ruled out other causes, why are you uncomfortable taking antidepressants to manage your side effects, just as you would take drugs to manage nausea or constipation?

“This is a temporary solution to what sound like pretty serious depression symptoms. Realistically, these are your other options: either keep suffering the depression symptoms while your life falls apart, or go off glps and lose access to their life-changing health benefits. It's obviously your choice based on why you are taking glps and what your health needs are, but there are literally dozens of antidepressants available and if you don't feel better on whatever your doctor prescribes first, try a different one. If you are not chronically depressed and haven't experienced depression before, then your depression is medication induced and can be managed by medication without changing who you are.”

The person went on to say: “Right now if you can't get out of bed, not only is your quality of life cr@p, but you aren't able to make the positive life changes you need to make to manage your weight long-term. Research the drugs your doctor is suggesting and examine your feelings about them and see what's making you uncomfortable. You may need a counselor to help you with this, and that's okay, too.”
