Experts have revealed which five foods you should absolutely never freeze.

Saving your leftovers for another meal can be a great way to avoid food waste but it turns out that not everything is suitable for freezing.

This comes after experts released a warning to urge people to take care when preserving their dishes.

In fact, there are five specific foods that you should avoid freezing at all costs, with some food items becoming spoiled if they get too cold.

The team from Which? explained: “Some foods can’t cope with being frozen without the quality being affected. They might become watery, limp and unpleasant to eat.”

The experts continued: “Most foods can be frozen as long as they’re still in date, however, some will deteriorate or separate in the process.”

So, which foods can’t you freeze to save for later?

Fried and oily food

Anything that has been fried, including chicken or fish is best to leave away from the freezer due to the fact that they can get soggy when defrosting.

Hard boiled eggs

According to the experts, hard boiled eggs don’t tend to freeze well.

However, while you can’t freeze them as a whole, hard boiled yolks are perfectly safe to freeze for later as long as you remember to add in a small amount of salt or sugar into the mixture.

This prevents the yolk from turning into a gel when thawing.

Vegetables with a lot of water

Another food product which might now defrost well includes vegetables that have a high content of water in them.

This includes foods such as lettuce and cucumbers as they can end up turning into mush once they’re out of the freezer.

Yoghurt

Unfortunately, if you don’t finish your yoghurt and want to save it for later, then the freezer might not be the best place to store it.

This is because the product can separate as it thaws, making it watery and icier, and ultimately not pleasant to eat.

The same can be said for single cream which has a similar reaction when defrosting.

Soft cheese

Last but not least, another food item that you should absolutely not stick in the freezer after dinner is soft cheese.

The experts explained: “It’s safe to freeze soft cheese, but this is not recommended as it ends up very watery when defrosted. This includes cheeses such as brie, feta and cream cheese.

“That said, if you have soft cheese in a recipe – such as a pasta sauce – this will freeze much better.”
