One of Saudi Arabia's biggest ventures has now reached a major milestone, as a new update indicates that the $1,000,000,000 giga-project is one step closer to reaching it's green goal.

There have been a number of new green energy solutions cropping up across the world, with the majority being in China between a 'Solar Great Wall' and a power station in space.

However, one of the most significant and potentially impactful projects is being constructed in Saudi Arabia, who initially invested $500,000,000,000 into a gigantic hydrogen plant that could offset significant CO2 emissions in a bid to combat climate change.

The NEOM Green Hydrogen Project, located near Duba in Saudi Arabia, will be the world's largest commercially-based hydrogen facility that's powered entirely by renewable energy.

Construction began back in 2022 and it is estimated that the total cost of the plant and its new surrounding city will stretch beyond $8,800,000,000,000 when complete.

Things appear to be looking good for the plant itself though, as reports from OilPrice.com indicate that it has reached a milestone of 80% completion, and is on track to begin its green hydrogen production in 2027.

Hydrogen processing will be its primary task and energy source once it has been completed, with roughly 600 metric tonnes of renewable and green gas being produced every single day, which would overall offset around 5,000,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year, marking a major move in the fight against climate change and global warming.

This five million tonnes can be difficult to comprehend in terms of its impact on the world, but experts indicate that it is the equivalent of removing 210,000 vehicles from the road every year.

That's far from the only source of energy inside the NEOM plant though, as it'll also have the capacity to produce 4 GW of wind and solar power by the midpoint of next year, and there will also be 400 MW of battery storage at the facility.

With reports that the Earth is reaching what scientists are calling a climate 'tipping point' where it'll be near impossible for humanity to reverse the impacts of global warming, it's vitally important that efforts are made to switch away from harmful emissions that serve as the root of the problem.

Even with giga-projects like these though it might not be enough from a capacity and time perspective, as production and demands continue to grow - especially with the rise of AI - and many of the world's richest companies and individuals persist in their emission-heavy behavior.
