While phone companies are racing to bring consumers the latest in AI tech, it seems that the future could be closer than we think as one firm is taking it one step further.

The futuristic ‘Robot’ Phone has the potential to bring about a new age of smartphone devices as the phone appears to offer its users human-like interactions with the robotic gimbal camera.

The phone is on display at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, and while much of the information on the extent of its capabilities is still a mystery, the tech company behind the device has given the world some fresh insight.

Created by Chinese phone maker HONOR, the Robot Phone is being dubbed as a ‘new species of smartphone’.

According to the firm, this phone won’t just react through screens and voice commands like other AI assistants.

Instead, it will have a brain - well, figuratively at least - in order to give its users a more human-like and expressive interaction.

So, what are the specs of this device? The Robot Phone comes with an ultra-compact 4DoF gimbal system which enables robot-grade embodied motion control and supports a three-axis gimbal stabilization system.

The device is able to react in real-time with its AI Object Tracking and has AI SpinShot to support intelligent 90 degree and 180 degree rotational movement.

In HONOR’s concept videos for the device, its gimbal camera almost appears sentient, bearing nostalgic resemblance to Disney Pixar’s Wall-E - although this robot is pocket-sized.

There is much about the Robot Phone’s capabilities that is still yet to be disclosed, but it has been revealed that the robot can interact with its user including expressive nods and head shakes, and can even have a little boogie to music.

The device has a 200MP sensor and a stabilized gimbal camera system which HONOR says will assist users with capturing moments.

It boasts stabilization, intelligent tracking and cinematic-style camera movement.

And while the concept of the Robot Phone still feels a bit too sci-fi to be real, a major update from the company might mean the reality of the device could be here much sooner than you might think.

That’s because it has been confirmed that the smartphone will be in the hands of consumers this year, with a release window given for the second half of 2026.

HONOR has unveiled other devices ahead of MWC, including the Magic V6 which boasts a battery that has an energy density surpassing even the likes of a Tesla battery.
