Polymarket has announced it is opening the first ‘free grocery store’ in New York City and it has been met with a mixed reaction.
The news was posted to X, formerly Twitter, by the crypto prediction market and many have taken to social media to share their own reactions to it.
In the post, the company wrote: “After months of planning, we’re excited to announce ‘The Polymarket’ is coming to New York City. New York’s first free grocery store.
“We signed the lease. And we donated $1 million to Food Bank For NYC - an organization that changes how our city responds to hunger.”

In further posts, it read: “As a part of our mission of giving back to the city we call home, we’ve donated $1 million to @FoodBank4NYC to help fight food insecurity across all five boroughs.
“Their mission is simple & inspirational: empower every New Yorker to achieve food security for good.”
It continued: “The Polymarket is fully stocked. No purchase required. We’re open to all New Yorkers. A real, physical investment in our community.”
The news was met with some ruffled feathers, with one user writing: “This is perhaps one of THE best example yet I’ve seen of how fundamentally unwell this capitalistic society is.
“Ahhh yes … let’s take advantage of people’s WORSE vices including greed … and then use that to make betting on ANYTHING a possibility … ruin countless lives via gambling, insider trading etc. We’ll make BILLIONS off the back of that.
“THEN let’s charity wash ALL of that and cleanse our brands with this blatant PR move with a measly $1 million (or few million) donation.
“Everything about this is so broken. Making money at ANY cost to society is absolutely disgraceful. We should NOT celebrate startups like this.”

However, not everyone agreed with the sentiment as another said: “Turning prediction-market profits into real-world impact. If Polymarket can make a free grocery store work at scale, that’s innovation with purpose. The $1M to Food Bank For NYC is a strong start.”
A third person commented: “Couldn't be more proud of being part of this initiative. Crazy watching what started as a crazy idea last November turn into reality…”
And a fourth added: “A free grocery store in NYC and a $1M donation is more than just headline - it's credibility, community impact, and a signal that this industry is growing up fast. Strong move from Polymarket.”
The grand opening of the free store is set to take place on February 12, with an additional $1 million having been raised for the Food Bank For New York City.
