Sophie Rain, widely considered the biggest content creator on OnlyFans, has engaged in a fiery debate with Florida governor hopeful James Fishback, as the Republican aims to implement a 'sin tax' that would see adult creators stripped of 50 per cent of their income in the state.
The dramatic increase in popularity of OnlyFans, alongside similar subscription platforms, has completely transformed the adult industry to place the power primarily in the hands of the models themselves through a direct-to-consumer model.
Through this, adult stars are able to set their own prices, determine what content they make and the frequency of it, and keep most, if not all, of the money themselves in a business model that has proven to be incredibly lucrative for its top stars.
While there are still seemingly unethical practices implemented by some of the top creators, the emergence of OnlyFans has been championed by some as a step forward for women wanting to control their own bodies — yet there are many that don't necessarily hold that same opinion.

Among these is James Fishback, who is currently in the running for the Republican spot in Florida's upcoming political race, and one of the most notable aspects of his manifesto is a 'sin tax' that would contrast the state's zero income tax status for certain individuals.
Fishback's proposed sin tax would cause individuals deemed as adult creators to forfeit 50 per cent of their earnings in the state of Florida to the government, despite the state itself famously having no income tax whatsoever.

His purported motivation for the controversial financial policy is to discourage young women from turning to OnlyFans in times of economic hardship, as while he's professed his opposition to President Donald Trump's policy during the current term, he believes that adult content creation seemingly impairs the future of women 'as a mother and as a worker'.
In conjunction with this, Fishback has proposed investment in teacher salaries, school lunches, mental health initiatives, and training for women that would be paid for with the proposed sin tax, offering in his eyes an alternative route for women that is free of the 'immortal' nature of adult content creation.
One of the most notable critics of Fishback's proposed sin tax is Miami native Sophie Rain, who quickly arose as OnlyFans most prominent creator after sharing yearly income in the tens of millions.
Growing up in a poor family that relied on food stamps, Rain entered the world of employment with a minimum wage waitressing job, of which she was fired from after her OnlyFans account was discovered by the owner.

She is also a devout Christian having been raised within the faith, and despite the adult nature of her work she remains in close contact with her family and her church and even insists on her ongoing virginity.
Rain has spoken out against the sin tax on numerous occasions as it would affect her directly, and recently took on Fishback in a fiery debate broadcast on Piers Morgan Uncensored this week.
Addressing her thoughts on the sin tax directly, Rain outlined: "I'm going to be honest, it's ridiculous. It's very ridiculous. Florida already has no income state tax. It doesn't exist. So, it seems very selective and it seems like it's a punishment."
Fishback himself refuted the notion of it being a 'punishment', implying that it was more of a deterrent for 'thousands of young women' who feel like they can only make a living by selling content on OnlyFans.
Rain emphasized the freedom of choice that affords her the ability to do what she wants with her life and her body, arguing: "I think as adults we are all allowed to legally make our own decisions, and I think that we should also educate a lot more on all these opportunities that you are speaking of, because I don't think that we should be singling out any individual for what they choose to do."
She also added that she is 'very happy' with her career choices, and that it has allowed her significant financial mobility in a 'heavily damaged' economy.
As mentioned, James Fishback is a political candidate for the Republican nomination in Florida's 2026 gubernatorial election, but he also previously worked for investment hedge fund Greenlight Capital before resigning in 2023.
He founded Azoria Partners before it was shut down by independent trustees over legal concerns, and attempted to associate himself with President Trump by falsely claiming he was an advisor for Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

As reported by NBC News, one of Florida's largest school districts cut ties with Fishback in 2022 after allegations that he had an 'innapropriate relationship' with a student who was a minor.
During the aforementioned interview, Piers Morgan issued a £10,000 ($13,235) wager that Fishback wouldn't become Governor of Florida in the upcoming elections, pledging to donate money to charity if he were to lose.
Quoting the post on X, Sophie Rain also responded with a willingness to match this bet, and with Fishback currently sitting tied in third place in polls released by Emerson College Polling – holding just 4 per cent of the vote compared to Byron Donalds' 46 per cent – it looks like this could be costly for him.
