A simulation reveals the precise location inside Utah’s Nutty Putty Cave where a man became fatally trapped in 2009, offering a chilling look at one of the most tragic caving accidents in recent history.

Nutty Putty Cave, first discovered in 1960 by Utah caver and scout leader Dale Green, quickly gained a reputation among local adventurers for its twisting passageways and the soft, clay-like walls that inspired its name.

However, the cave was permanently sealed in 2009 after a man named John Edward Jones died after making a grave navigational error. He was a 26-year-old medical student from Utah who suffered a horrific death when he mistakenly entered an unmapped section of Nutty Putty cave. He crawled head-first into a fissure roughly 10 inches wide by 18 inches high—and became irreversibly stuck upside down in a downward‑sloping slot.

More than 100 rescuers worked for over 27 hours to free him, but the passage geometry, his inverted position and the risk of rescue operations made it impossible and Jones died as a result of cardiac arrest due to being trapped in that position.

Sharing an account of the rescue mission, Brandon Kowalis, who tried to free Jones, explained how a radio had been sent down so that the explorer's family could speak to him.

"There was a request to take the radio down to John so that his family could say some words to him," he wrote

"I think it was his father, mother, and wife who spoke to him, telling him that they loved him and were praying for him and that his father had given him a blessing.

"His wife mentioned a feeling of peace, that everything would be OK. She talked to him about 5 to 10 minutes before I told her that we needed to get back to working at getting him out."

The cave was permanently sealed after his death and his body remains at the site, which has become a memorial for him. A plaque in honour of the late medical student has been placed at the front, acting as a tombstone as his body lies below.

The exact spot where the tragedy occurred can be seen in a harrowing VR recreation of the cave by JustinWieb VR. The video was originally shared on YouTube and it was reposted on Reddit. Viewers have been left shaken after seeing the cramped space Jones was trapped in. “As someone with claustrophobia the idea of going into any cave is a no from me,” one Reddit user claimed.

“My heart rate increases just f***ing watching this sh*t,” added another.

A third wrote: “This is honestly one of the scariest things i can think of and every time I read that name I feel queasy.”

“The amount of anxiety and sheer panic that gave me is UNREAL,” added another user, while someone else shared, “I'm sick just watching this.”
