Many are fearful that nuclear war could be on the horizon, yet you might be shocked to find out the safety measured afforded for President Donald Trump compared to the average American citizen.

It shouldn't exactly come as a surprise that the president and key White House staff are given more protection that most in the event of an attack, as there's even an infamous 'doomsday plane' that would take Trump to safety if he was away when the big red button needed to be hit.

Experts have revealed in the past that there's top-secret nuclear bunkers hidden all across the country, where the nation's most powerful figures will huddle up in the thousands to avoid the dangerous radiation lurking above ground.

However, that still doesn't compare to the secret shelter hidden underneath the White House grounds, taking the president right from the comfort of the Oval Office into safety as soon as news of an attack comes through.

It's expected that the president, alongside key political and military figures, will be alerted to the presence of an incoming nuclear weapon within minutes of it being launched, giving them around 10 to 15 minutes to decide whether a counter attack is sanctioned.

That won't be done above ground, however, as Trump – or any other sitting president, for that matter – will be swiftly whisked away to a secure location that could very well be underneath the White House itself, as per the BBC.

There are the necessary means for a president to continue ruling after a nuclear attack while inside the bunker, although he'd only be joined by a select few 'at the top of the food chain' in order to maintain order.

Despite how sophisticated this secret bunker is likely to be, it'll still not be enough if a nuclear weapon were to strike Washington D.C., as nothing can survive a blast that strong despite how well built it is.

"There's no defense against the tremendous blast and heat," explains Kenneth Rose, nuclear bunker expert and author of One Nation Underground: The Fallout Shelter in American Culture, and you'd imagine that the White House could be near the top of the list of targets for an opposing nation like Russia or China.

The bunker itself, as revealed in a video by Beyond Facts on YouTube, is located underneath the White House's East Wing, and is equipped with its own air filtration systems and power supplies in order to maintain operations in the most extreme scenarios.

It was first entered into public consciousness following the 9/11 attacks as Vice President Dick Cheney and other key senior officials took refuge inside as a safety precaution, but much of the actual specifics of the bunker remain hidden and will likely stay that way for a very long time.
