Ahead of Google I/O 2025, the Alphabet-owned company just quietly updated its logo and it's causing a stir among its many users.
In 2015, Google switched its logo to a modern Product Sans typeface. The famous 'G' icon was changed from the lowercase white ‘g’ on a blue background, 9to5Google reported.
Now, 10 years later, the tech giant has given its logo a new look. Although depending on your preferred browser or device, you probably haven't noticed, as it's pretty darn subtle.

Google has begun rolling out the change on its smartphone apps and app stores, first starting with Google Search on iOS before Google on Android. The new design keeps the red, yellow, green, and blue colours on the 'G' letter. However, instead of the blocky, divided colour look, all the colours blend smoothly like a gradient.

According to 9to5Google, the 'modernization feels inline with the Gemini gradient,' which if you don't know, is Google's AI chatbot and a top contender against OpenAI's ChatGPT. Formerly known as Bard, Gemini can help with a range of tasks including brainstorming, creating emails, generating images and even interacting with other Google apps.
With the redesign, it wouldn’t be surprising if other Google logos and icons like those for Gmail, Chrome or Maps eventually get the same gradient treatment. But for now, this is just a single change.

Plus, the company is still using the old 'G' icon in several spots, like the Google Search favicon and the Google Search blog.
Amazon did a similar move towards the end of last year and confused its shoppers when the strip of tape on the Amazon package logo changed from its well-known light blue to stripes of dark and light green. Similarly, around the same time, YouTube updated its logo after seven years.

However, Google's logo change has divided the internet.
On social media, some people view it as a lazy redesign and an 'ugly' one at that.
"It’s awful. Someone just applied “radial blur” once and called it a day. It’s ugly," one Reddit user commented.
"Wow... how novel. How did these geniuses think of such a superb redesign? Truly bold work," another sarcastically replied.

"The new one looks like someone just learned the gradient feature exists," claimed another user whilst on another discussion forum, someone else called it a 'downgrade.'
But others actually liked the newer, smoother design.
"I like it," one user wrote while another added: "Looks good! Far less hard when you compare them side by side."
However, a few Reddit users didn't seem to notice a difference, writing: "I don't think I would even notice the difference."
