President Donald Trump has responded after Elon Musk's departure from his role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Just hours before stepping down, Musk expressed 'disappointment' with Trump’s newly announced 'big, beautiful bill' that would 'undermine' DOGE's mission.
The legislation includes a significant boost in defence spending, including Trump’s proposed 'Golden Dome' shield over the US, alongside multi-trillion-dollar tax breaks. Analysts estimate the bill could raise federal spending by as much as $600 billion in the upcoming fiscal year.
Since Trump’s inauguration in January, the two appeared almost inseparable. But behind the scenes, many thought tensions were growing.

In the lead-up to the departure, their noticeable silence on social media only fuelled the speculation.
That said, Musk's exit from the Trump administration was expected, but the timing also came three days early.

Musk's unique position in the US government as a ‘special government employee’ allowed him to work for up to 130 days each year. His work focused largely on cutting wasteful federal spending by billions, a task that made him unpopular in the public eye and ultimately impacted his businesses.
Despite any strain, Trump is giving Musk a public send-off in helping him reclaim the White House.
"I am having a Press Conference tomorrow at 1:30 P.M. EST, with Elon Musk, at the Oval Office," the US president posted on Truth Social.
"This will be his last day, but not really, because he will, always, be with us, helping all the way. Elon is terrific! See you tomorrow at the White House." Which means today's the day!

Musk himself announced his departure on his social media platform, X.

"As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending," he posted.
"The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government."
When questioned about his reason for leaving the White House, he responded: “I think I’ve done enough.”
Clearing up any rumours beforehand, 'DogeDesigner' - who Musk frequently interacts with - posted an update.

"In the coming days, legacy media will try to convince you that President Trump and Elon Musk are no longer friends and that's why Musk left," the post read. "What they won't tell you is that Elon was a Special Government Employee, limited to 130 days of service and that term ends tomorrow."
