Women revealed to be three times more likely to lose jobs to AI and there's certain roles under threat

The jobs most likely to be replaced by AI have been revealed

Women have been revealed to be three times more likely to lose their jobs to AI and there are certain roles that are under threat.

New research has unveiled some shocking statistics around who is most at risk of losing their jobs in the rise of artificial intelligence.

According to a study by the UN’s International Labour Organization (ILO), women are three times more likely than men to be impacted by the use of AI in the workplace.

In the study, a team of researchers created an index for the risk of job replacement of transformation into jobs by AI.

In the report, it said: “In high-income countries, jobs at the highest risk of automation make up 9.6% of female employment — a stark contrast to 3.5 per cent of such jobs among men.”

In a statement senior economist at the ILO, Janine Berg, said: “This tool helps countries across the world assess potential exposure and prepare their labor markets for a fairer digital future.”

Which jobs are most at risk of being taken by AI?

The study also highlighted which jobs are most at risk of being replaced by AI automation.

These roles include typists, data and bookkeeping clerks, financial analysts and software developers.

In its statement, the ILO continued: “Clerical jobs face the highest exposure of all, due to GenAI’s theoretical ability to automate many of their tasks.

“However, the expanding abilities of GenAI result in an increased exposure of some highly digitized cognitive jobs in media, software and finance related occupations.”

Berg added: “It’s easy to get lost in the AI hype. What we need is clarity and context. This tool helps countries across the world assess potential exposure and prepare their labour markets for a fairer digital future.”

The ILO went on to call on governments, employers’, and workers’ organizations to ‘engage in social dialogue and shape proactive, inclusive strategies that can enhance productivity and job quality, especially in exposed sectors’.

Which jobs are considered low-risk?

While those are the jobs most at risk of replacement, there are some that are deemed safe in the rise of AI.

According to the ILO report, the jobs most likely to still require human workers include cleaners, dentists, performers, and garbage collectors.

Marek Troszyński, who is a senior expert at NASK and one of co-authors of the new paper, said: “This index helps identify where GenAI is likely to have the biggest impact, so countries can better prepare and protect workers. Our next step is to apply this new index to detailed labour force data from Poland.”
