Earlier this week saw the Democrats take control of Congress after voters took to the polls to have their say in the seats up for grabs in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
And the results indicated a resounding shift in the balance of political power in DC, with some seats representing a historic vote. One particularly monumental turn happened in Texas, which voted in a Democratic senator for the first time since 1988.
Since the midterm elections, which took place on Tuesday (November 3), many have been questioning what the results will mean for some of President Donald Trump’s policies, who could be set to have a difficult remainder of his presidency.
One key factor now up in the air is the expansion of artificial intelligence, which democratic lawmakers have already earmarked as being of potential interest for increased scrutiny.
Could OpenAI face investigation from Congress after midterms?
Tech companies across the US could now be anticipating scrutiny over their AI policies, with Trump’s ambitious $500 billion AI project alongside OpenAI, known as Stargate, potentially becoming a target.

The huge AI infrastructure initiative was announced by Trump alongside OpenAI CEO Sam Altman back in January 2025.
The project was presented as a $500 billion investment into America’s AI future, with OpenAI, Japanese investment giant SoftBank and Oracle among the key firms involved.
The infrastructure is intended to provide the enormous computing capacity required to develop and operate increasingly advanced AI systems, but building these facilities comes with significant demands on America’s electricity supply, land and other resources.
Data centers require huge amounts of electricity to power the thousands of specialized computer chips inside them, while their cooling systems can also place pressure on local water supplies.
This has become an increasingly contentious issue for communities across the US, particularly as residents raise concerns about whether the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure could push up their household electricity bills.
Democrats have already been pushing for greater scrutiny of the financial incentives offered to companies building these facilities and now, with control of both chambers of Congress, the party will have a lot more opportunity to demand answers.

How can the Democrats scrutinize AI companies?
With this new mandate, Democrats in Congress will be able to use congressional committees to organize hearings, request documents and issue subpoenas as part of their oversight work.
Senator Ed Markey has already indicated that major tech companies should prepare for increased scrutiny as, following the election results, Markey warned that executives should expect a significant number of subpoenas, according to Cointelegraph.
Markey said: “They are going to need to plant new forests for all of the subpoenas we’ll be printing.”
Meanwhile, Democratic Representative Robert Garcia, who is expected to take over as chairman of the House Oversight Committee, issued a blunt warning to those who could find themselves under investigation, stating: “Lawyer up.”
