With Democrats celebrating a resounding victory at the midterm election polls, questions are now being raised about how Congress could potentially impact government policies.
This includes the Trump administration’s interest in the expansion of AI, as Democratic lawmakers have already indicated plans to put a halt on the development of data centers.
After the election results rolled in on Tuesday (November 3), Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Greg Casar described it as ‘the early tremor of a much bigger AI earthquake upending American politics’.
This isn’t the only comment made by Democratic politicians since the election, with some taking to social media to share their reactions. On X, formerly Twitter, Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari: “Top of the Democratic agenda on day 1 needs to be a pause on advanced AI development, regulation of this out of control industry, and a ban on artificial superintelligence.”

Tech leaders react to Republican midterm election loss
Tech bosses could be set to be impacted by the shift in the balance of power in DC, especially as Trump has been championing the expansion of AI with his own initiative Stargate, in partnership with OpenAI.
The huge AI infrastructure project was initially announced by Trump alongside OpenAI CEO Sam Altman back in January 2025.
The project was presented as a $500 billion investment into America’s AI future, with OpenAI, Japanese investment giant SoftBank and Oracle among the key firms involved.
The infrastructure is intended to provide the enormous computing capacity required to develop and operate increasingly advanced AI systems, but building these facilities comes with significant demands on America’s electricity supply, land and other resources.
It seems the aftermath of the election is spelling bad news for the tech leaders, with Altman also speaking out on X to say: “People should always be in control of the future. OpenAI is against the notion that it would be acceptable for people to be relegated to a role of doing things that ‘AI systems think makes sense to reward in humans’.

“People should not cede control of the future to superintelligence, and that requirement should ultimately constrain AI progress.”
However, it looks like Democrats have their sights set on AI regulation as Senator Ed Markey said: “They are going to need to plant new forests for all of the subpoenas we’ll be printing.”
Meanwhile, Democratic Representative Robert Garcia, who is expected to take over as chairman of the House Oversight Committee, issued a blunt warning to those who could find themselves under investigation, stating: “Lawyer up.”
