ChatGPT users have been left divided as a brand-new ‘group chat’ feature is launched on the platform.
The AI bot has some new features brought by OpenAI which will now enable people to start group chats with the AI.
On the tech firm’s website, it explained: “Today, we’re beginning to pilot a new experience in a few regions that makes it easy for people to collaborate with each other - and with ChatGPT - in the same conversation. With group chats, you can bring friends, family, or coworkers into a shared space to plan, make decisions, or work through ideas together.
“Whether you’re organizing a group dinner or drafting an outline with coworkers, ChatGPT can help. Group chats are separate from your private conversations, and your personal ChatGPT memory is never shared with anyone in the chat.

“Group chats are starting to roll out on mobile and web for logged-in ChatGPT users on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan. This pilot is a small first step toward shared experiences in ChatGPT, and we expect to learn from early user feedback to inform how we expand to more regions and ChatGPT plans.”
However, this news seems to have divided people, as many took to social media to share their own thoughts on the matter.
On Reddit, one user wrote: “Great for vacation planning with friends / family, that's what I'll be using it for over the holidays.”
Another said: “I just know this is going to get used in a weird sexual way, I just don’t know how yet and I’m scared to find out.”
And a third person added: “It feels unnecessary for most people and the privacy angle is a fair concern. Unless you're actually collaborating on a project, it just adds extra surfaces for data to sit in. Most users won’t touch it, and it doesn’t solve any real problem people had.”

On the update, OpenAI said: “Group chats make it possible to bring people, and ChatGPT, into the same conversation. For example, if you’re planning a weekend trip with friends, create a group chat so ChatGPT can help compare destinations, build an itinerary, and create a packing list with everyone participating and following along.
“For more hands-on projects, like designing a backyard garden or finding art for a new apartment, create a group chat with your partner or roommates to help collaborate on design ideas, preferences, and styles together.”
