Amazon employees sound the alarm with explosive letter warning their AI will cause 'staggering damage' to Earth

Workers have spoken out against their employer

Many people have outlined the countless issues currently plaguing the world alongside the rapid expansion of AI technology, but Amazon workers have focused specifically on the 'staggering damage' it will cause to our planet in an explosive open letter to the company's management.

You're certainly right to be fearful for what artificial intelligence will do for global employment, alongside fears regarding its use in political and misinformation campaigns, yet its hard to deny that one of the biggest worries surrounding the emergent technology is how it'll affect our environment.

The dramatic increase in data centers across the United States has already had a tangible effect on the areas they have been built in, with energy price hikes and damage to water systems among the myriad of issues highlighted by local residents.

People have also expressed the inevitable harm that AI will cause to the climate, as the intensive nature of its operation is not only incredibly water hungry but requires an alarming amount of power to run, which has to be drawn from somewhere and is likely linked to increasing fossil fuel emissions.

As reported by Fortune, it appears that over 1,000 Amazon employees across all divisions have had enough, signing now an explosive open letter to CEO Andy Jassy and his fellow members of the company's senior management team that sounds the alarm on AI.

While this might be just a small fraction of the company's roughly 1.53 million worker base, it's a direct call-to-action that has certainly been heard, especially considering Amazon's primary role in the expansion of AI services alongside companies like Meta, Google, and ChatGPT creator OpenAI.

The letter claims that Amazon is "casting aside its climate goals to build AI," which is manifested in management directives that force workers to use AI while the employees themselves are being laid off at an increased rate, especially after it was revealed that its carbon emissions have increased since 2019 despite committing to a net-zero goal by 2040.

Amazon is also criticized for helping to build "a more militarized surveillance state with fewer protections for ordinary people," which is particularly concerning alongside "the global rise of authoritarianism and our most important years to reverse the climate crisis."

Scientists have repeatedly warned that we're approaching a climate 'tipping point' where the damage done to our planet will become irreversible, and the global emphasis on AI usage and development appears to only be accelerating the speed at which we reach that point.

"We believe that the all-costs-justified, warp-speed approach to AI development will do staggering damage to democracy, to our jobs, and to the Earth," the letter continues.

Amazon has denied the claims made in the open letter, arguing that it is "categorically false and ignores the facts" in a statement to Fortune. The company also asserted that it is "already committed to powering our operations even more sustainably and investing in carbon-free energy."
