Sony begins sending out free gifts as apology to PlayStation users affected by 'system error' issues

Players were unable to redeem their vouchers

Sony is sending out free gifts as an apology to PlayStation players affected by voucher redemption issues over Christmas 2024.

On 24 December, some players encountered a 'systems error' that prevented them from redeeming voucher codes on the PlayStation Store.

As a goodwill gesture, Sony has identified impacted accounts and added $10 to their digital wallets.

According to PlayStation Lifestyle, Sony has sent out an official email to multiple players worldwide apologising for the issue and already credited the funds.

“We are aware that on 12/24/24 a systems error resulted in users being unable to redeem voucher codes on the PlayStation Store and we have identified your account as one impacted by this error," the email reads. “We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused and have provided you with a 10 USD wallet credit.

Your voucher should now be redeemable as well if you have not yet redeemed it.”

The issue seems to have only lasted a day, but it impacted users across all PlayStation platforms.

Since this happened over two months ago, most people likely brushed it off as a minor glitch, assuming Sony would quietly move on without addressing it.

But one player informed PlayStation Lifestyle that, despite the trouble redeeming their voucher, they didn’t lose it.

So it seems Sony is offering compensation to anyone inconvenienced, not just those who lost funds.

If you tried redeeming a code on Christmas Eve last year, it's worth checking your email. You might just find yourself with a free ten bucks.

Meanwhile, PlayStation fans are still waiting on the five-day PS Plus extension Sony promised as compensation for the massive PSN outage earlier this month.

The 24-hour outage left thousands of users unable to access any online services, including multiplayer games, the PlayStation Store or their online accounts. Since then, many users have taken to social media to demand refunds or free games since they lost out on promotional weekends and special tournaments.

Given how long it took to roll out this latest credit from December, it might take some time before the PS Plus extension is applied.

In the meantime, make sure to snag the nine games currently available on PS Premium and Extra, including Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage - Tape 1, and Somerville.

Also, don't miss out on the 10 iconic games that are leaving the Plus catalogue next month. Episodic adventure Life is Strange 2 and Capcom's survival horror remake Resident Evil 3 will disappear from the PS Plus catalogue on March 18!
