Sony PlayStation giving away $100 free store credit for gamers to claim

There's always a catch

Despite continued claims that the console wars have burned down to embers, we'd argue that's anything but the case. While it seemed like it was the Blue Team versus the Green Team since Sony and Microsoft released the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series in 2020, Nintendo then tossed in a hand grenade with the release of the Switch 2.

This generation of consoles has been filled with drama and infighting, but away from mass Microsoft layoffs and studio closures, we've seen the record-breaking Activision Blizzard King acquisition, and console exclusivity has become a hot topic of conversation.

As we move into a largely disc-free landscape, and with 95.4% of games sold in 2024 being digital, the various storefronts mean big business. Sony has vowed to make things better with its notoriously divisive PlayStation store, but after you demanded refunds for a massive PlayStation Network outage, the gaming giant is now rewarding some users with $100 of free credit.

PlayStation LifeStyle reports how Sony is offering $100 to spend on anything in the store. There are numerous sales on the PlayStation Store, so considering you can get Red Dead Redemption II for $14.99, the Mafia Trilogy for $11.99, and the Batman: Arkham Collection is just $5.99, that $100 can go a long way. Even the recent release of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle being $55.99 means there's plenty of leftover change. With GTA 6 rumored to cost $100, prices are on the rise, and we could do with every free bonus we can get.

As with most of these things, there's obviously a catch. The outlet reiterates that only select players who've upgraded to any new PS5 model in the month of September will be eligible. The 'upgrader program' is also only available to those in the USA and is available via special invitation only.PlayStation LifeStyle confirms it's seen confirmation of the email, which explains the offer is only running until September 20.

The $100 credit can be claimed if you activate your new console before September 20 and have bought a new console since the offer went live on August 26. It applies to gamers who upgraded from PS4 to PS5, from launch PS5 to PS5 slim, and from any of those to the PS5 Pro.

There's obviously a limit of one voucher per PSN account, and you can't buy a console on someone's behalf to claim another voucher.

If you have your eye on a specific game or have a pre-order sitting in your basket, now could be the time to claim. Sadly, the GTA 6 pre-orders aren't live yet, meaning you won't be able to cash your voucher in.
