Tech experts reveal secret 'console killer' that's better than PS5 Pro for just $20

You could get more performance for far less

The PlayStation 5 Pro is the pinnacle of performance for anyone in the console world, offering the perfect hybrid of visuals and frame rates with minimal compromise, yet one tech expert has revealed the secret 'console killer' that you can get for just $20 that beats even Sony's best offering.

It has been long accepted in the gaming world that anyone looking for the best possible performance should probably get a PC, as the options and flexibility on offer allows gamers to achieve things that console owners could only dream of — alongside a plethora of cheap and free games.

By far the two biggest obstacles to that for many though are price and accessibility, as not only are PC parts notoriously more expensive than going out and buying a new console – with 'mid-range' graphics cards alone costing more than the PS5 or Xbox Series X – but building a PC can be seen as a more complex process many would rather avoid.

That's why anyone wanting to play it safe typically tends to go for something like the PS5 Pro, yet one tech expert has revealed gaming's best kept secret that can give you performance levels that far exceed the best consoles can offer for just $20.

What is the 'console killer' for $20?

As shared by Jason England at Tom's Guide, an Nvidia GeForce Now subscription for just $20 offers people performance levels that are impossible to ignore, especially when you consider the upcoming addition of RTX 5080 support in the Ultimate tier.

You might know Nvidia from their industry leading graphics cards – or maybe just from its recent overwhelming success thanks to the AI boom – but one of the company's best products is arguably their most underappreciated.

Launching initially in early 2020, GeForce Now is a cloud streaming service that allows gamers to virtually control a powerful PC somewhere in the cloud, letting them play their games at potentially far greater frame rates and resolutions than their own PC could offer.

While the $20-per-month Ultimate tier currently offers the already excellent RTX 4080 GPU, it's soon to get a major upgrade in September that gives subscribers access to the new RTX 5080 graphics card and all of the performance improvements that come with that — and it's so good that Jason England's PS5 Pro already feels old.

How does Nvidia GeForce Now work?

As mentioned, GeForce Now allows you to effectively occupy a PC on one of Nvidia's servers, letting you stream any games that you own to that system in order to take advantage of the top level tech that Nvidia has.

For example, Jason's testing reveals that booting up the notoriously intensive Cyberpunk 2077 through GeForce now allows you to achieve at least 120 frames per second at 4K resolution, and that's with the jaw-dropping visuals of path traced reflections and lighting enabled.

Comparatively, the PS5 Pro can only achieve 30 fps with ray tracing enabled at 4K, and it still doesn't look anywhere near as good as the GeForce Now equivalent with this.

One of the biggest issues that some people might face is the cloud element, as it requires you to have high speed internet that's capable of streaming at such impressive resolutions and frame rates — especially in order to keep the latency as low as possible.

Speaking of latency, Jason reveals that it's essentially not an issue anymore, as testing at 1080p and 360 fps he was able to achieve speeds of 17ms, which was nearly half of the 30ms that Nvidia itself was advertising, and more than enough for even the sweatiest of competitive games.
