Gamers sorely disappointed at leaked 'first look' of Nintendo Switch 2

We were hoping Nintendo would 'switch' it up a bit

When it comes to the existence of the Nintendo Switch 2, those years of rumors and rampant speculation could finally be paying off. The Nintendo Switch first launched in 2017, and since then, it's become one of the best-selling consoles of all time. While the OG Switch is still shy of the PlayStation 2's 160 million units sold, there are high hopes that a successor can climb the ranks to take Sony down a peg or two.

The Switch boasts incredible titles including Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but after seven years of topping the charts and frequently beating its rivals at Microsoft and Sony, the Switch is being put out to pasture. Thankfully, with upcoming games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and a long-awaited mainline 3D Mario game sure to take us into a new generation, there are high hopes that the Switch 2 (or whatever it's called) will be another record-breaking success instead of just another Wii U waiting to happen.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa officially confirmed a new console was on the way in May 2024, and with a few vague announcements since then, patience is running out. The Switch 2 looks like it'll be in our hands this time next year to dominate Christmas 2025, but ahead of a full reveal, gamers are convinced they've got their first look at the next console - coming in the most unlikely place imaginable.

A company called Satisfye is known for making controller grips for the Switch's Joy-Cons, and in a now-deleted trailer, it's seemingly given us an accidental first glimpse of the Switch 2. Although Satisfye quickly pulled the video, you should all know that Redditors don't miss a trick. With screenshots shared to r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, we've potentially got our 'first look' at the Switch 2. Coming as no real surprise, it looks a lot like the old Switch, and with it, you aren't happy.

While Nintendo has reinvented the wheel with generational jumps between the likes of the N64 to the GameCube, and the GameCube to the Wii, the gaming giant would've been mad to deliver a radical redesign on something as successful as the Switch. With speculation the Switch 2 would be more like the upgrade between the Nintendo DS and the DSi, rumors suggest there could be changes to how Joy-Cons affix to the console, a bigger eight-inch screen, and a dock that's able to upscale from 1080p to 4K.

None of that is revealed in the Satisfye video, but instead, we see a blurry outline of something that looks a lot like the Switch we know and love.

For those who think we're all losing our minds over a blurry image of a Switch, note how the screenshot includes an extra button on the right Joy-Con. As this isn't there on the current Switch and lines up with earlier leaks about the console, it seems this is our first 'real' look at the Switch 2.

Responding to the leak, one disgruntled gamer wrote: "I think the funniest thing about the Switch & Switch 2 is the power disparity between them, but you probably can't tell them apart if you see somebody holding a Switch from 20 metres away."

Another added, "It looks like..... gasp A Nintendo Switch," and a third joked, "Corporate wants you to find the difference between these 2 pictures."

Now we just need a name. Even though Nintendo will likely go with Switch 2, we think Super Nintendo Switch has a nice ring to it.
