GTA 6 price set to soar for country of 130M people ahead of May 2026 release

It's all because of a new form of tax

Gaming experts are expecting the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6 to be the biggest in the industry's history, yet a country with over 130,000,000 inhabitants could end up paying more than everyone else thanks to one new rule.

While there has been plenty of discussion surrounding the impressive graphics, size of the map, and potential celebrity cameos that might appear when GTA 6 releases next May, one of the biggest conversations has been around the price.

Unfortunately Nintendo has already broken the $70 'glass ceiling' with the release of the Switch 2, and Xbox shortly followed suit before a u-turn after fan backlash, but many are speculating that GTA 6 could go even further.

We won't know for sure until developer Rockstar Games officially reveals the price closer to that May 26, 2026 release date, but considering the jaw-dropping budget that the game likely had and a decade of development, it's almost guaranteed that it's going to be more than the industry standard.

Whether it's $70 or $100 though, one of the world's biggest gaming markets could end up paying quite a bit more thanks to a new tax implemented by the government, so you might want to start saving sooner rather than later.

As reported by Games Fuze, the Mexican government has just approved a new financial package that proposes a new 8% tax on video games that are classified as having "violent, explicit, or adult content."

This would place these games in the same tax category as alcohol and high-sugar drinks, and would be detrimental for the large proportion of games that involve violence of any kind.

Not only would this affect popular titles like Call of Duty and the newly released Battlefield 6, but it would be almost guaranteed to target GTA 6 when it does release, taking an even conservative estimate of MX$1,499 ($81.37) up to MX$1,619 ($87.89).

The reason why the government has pushed through this change is to curb the rise of aggressive and violent behavior in adolescents, which has allegedly been linked with video games.

This argument is certainly nothing new and has consistently been proven to be false by numerous scientific studies, but it's gaining prominence once again in a number of major governments across the world.

Some on social media have speculated that it's merely a means to raise government funds by taxing what are effectively the highest selling games, and regardless of whether that's true or not, the expected sales for GTA 6 will definitely make an impact.
