Cybersecurity experts have issued a warning to Amazon Fire Stick users over concerns that the app could be ‘spying on them’.

It’s everyone’s worst nightmare when it comes to home electronics but could the Amazon gadget really be snooping on us?

The app was previously available to download on the Amazon Appstore for Android devices such as Amazon Fire tablets and Fire TV sticks but has since been removed.

However, the likelihood is that it’s still installed on a lot of users’ devices and now a cybersecurity company is urging people to delete it.

McAfee is a computer security software firm and it is warning people that they should uninstall the app as soon as possible.

The app in question is called BMI Calculation Vsn and was promoted as a way to calculate your body mass index.

However, when inputting their information, users are asked if the app is allowed to record their screen once they’ve selected the ‘calculate’ button.

The message that pops up on the screen reads: “BMI Calculation will have access to all your information that is visible on your screen or played from your device while recording or casting.

“This includes information such as passwords, payment details, photos, messages and audio that you play.”

McAfee said: “This functionality is likely to capture gesture passwords or sensitive data from other apps.”

It’s feared that a lot of people who have used the app automatically clicked the ‘accept’ button without reading the text.

McAfee went on to say: “It intercepts and collects all SMS messages received on the device, potentially to capture one-time password (OTP), verification codes and sensitive information.”

Unluckily, McAfee has offered their expertises to help people avoid falling victim to malicious apps.

How to avoid malicious apps

First off, McAfee suggests downloading trusted antivirus apps that can help to ‘detect and prevent malicious apps before they can cause harm’.

Secondly, make sure you carefully review any permission requests from apps and deny any that seem unrelated to its function.

And lastly, watch out for any strange behaviour from your app. If your phone is suddenly draining its battery quickly or you notice a spike in your data usage, then this ‘could indicate malicious activity running in the background’.

McAfee added: “Apps like ‘BMI Calculation Vsn’ serve as a stark reminder that even the simplest tools can harbour hidden threats.

“By staying alert and adopting robust security measures, we can safeguard our privacy and data.”
