The floors of Lumon Industries could remain uninhabited for a bit longer yet, as Ben Stiller has given fans a concerning update on Severance season 3.
Originally released in February 2022, the Apple TV+ series became an overnight hit.
Starring Adam Scott as Mark S./ Mark Scout, he plays a former history professor who ends up being 'severed', where his work life is lived out by an alternate personality known as an 'Innie'.
Also starring Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, John Turturro, Tramell Tillman, and Patricia Arquette, the first two seasons of Severance have had an impressive roster of guest stars, including Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie, Ben Stiller himself, and even Keanu Reeves (although they tried to get Barack Obama). Apple's Tim Cook broke the internet with an eight-word tweet that confirmed Severance would be back for season 3, but with a three-year wait between season 1 and 2, we've learned patience is a virtue.

Stiller previously promised we wouldn't have to wait as long, telling This Morning: "I would love to tell you how long you'll have to wait, but the goal is definitely not to wait three years, between two and three."
With Severance breaking viewing records for Apple TV+ and beyond while boasting 95% on Rotten Tomatoes across two seasons, there's no escaping the sci-fi TV show's popularity. In the latest production update from Stiller, the executive producer and sometimes Severance director told The Severance Podcast with Ben Stiller & Adam Scott that season 3 is still being written.
Severance season 3 is still in pre-production, with things (slowly) chugging along.

This comes after creator Dan Erickson told IndieWire that the team knows how things will eventually wrap up: "We know the end, and we don’t really know how we’re getting there.
"We have some idea of how we’re getting there, but we definitely like to be open to playing jazz a little bit and changing things as we go along, falling in love with characters that we didn’t necessarily expect to fall in love with, and incorporating them into the story in new ways. I think it is possible to overplan, but we know where we’re going at the end of the day.”

Severance's sluggish schedule plods along while other Apple TV+ shows have boasted an impressive turnaround. The Rebecca Ferguson-led Silo premiered in 2023 and has a third season on the way in 2026. Season 3 and 4 were filmed back-to-back, meaning season 4 could arrive in 2027…presumably before Severance season 3 even airs.
There are few details about Severance season 3, although we know there will be one notable absence.
After directing six of season 1's nine episodes, Stiller also directed five of season 2's 10-episode run. Sadly, he won't be back for the next batch of episodes thanks to a packed working schedule that includes a Meet the Parents sequel and a World War II survival movie.
As Severance grows in popularity and more people continue to discover the series, the wait for season 3 is only going to get more agonizing.
