Apple secretly testing unknown software update reportedly coming ‘in weeks’

Apple's next iOS update could be just a few weeks away, and insiders suggest that it could hold the return of a controversially removed AI feature that caused quite the commotion.

Many iPhone users' experience with iOS 18 has been a bit of a rollercoaster, as they've experienced the highs of long-requested feature returns and the lows of app overhauls that have led some to even consider uninstalling the update altogether.

Apple's last update push - iOS 18.3 - was largely focused on security updates, which you'll always want on your phone if you're interested in cybersecurity, but this next update could bring back a feature that was removed last time around.

According to Apple experts from MacRumors and 9to5Mac, iOS 18.3.1 could potentially see AI summaries for News & Entertainment apps reactivated, after they were controversially disabled following reports of misinformation.

These 'incorrect' summaries are part of why some tech experts have advised users to disable Apple Intelligence on their devices, as it was providing incorrect readings of news stories from outlets like the BBC.

It's definitely not confirmed to be on its way back, especially considering the next update push will likely be a smaller one, but it would be a big move for Apple if they were able to have had it fixed in a short period of time, as reported by the Metro.

Apple has promised to reenable these summaries 'with a future update', but only time shall tell whether it's with iOS 18.3.1 in the next few weeks, or whether we have to wait longer to ensure all of the issues successfully ironed out.

Many have their eyes trained on the next major installment of iOS 18 though, which is indicated to bring with it new emojis, translation and map enhancements for EU users, and also AI improvements for Siri.

That last one will be of particular interest to any keen users of Apple Intelligence, as it'll offer dramatic overhauls to how you use your iPhone's digital assistant.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has already revealed that he's been using the AI-enhanced version of Siri every single day, and it'll bring with it upgrades to personal context and onscreen awareness to enhance and improve your overall user experience.

For example, the next update could allow you to speak more contextually about what you're currently looking at, letting you quickly add an event to your calendar or send a restaurant to your friend, or it could let you ask where your concert tickets are in your email.

If Apple Intelligence isn't your thing though there's always the new emojis, which include a tired face, fingerprint, shovel, an even a turnip - if any of those take your fancy.
